This will be my last posting on this blog. It has been so difficult to manage this large of a blog and I would prefer to close this out. To begin anew. I enjoy writing even in this format I have found too much to stop--which I tried for months. So, I begin the new blog with the link posted here. Not sure what direction it will take and then again in life we are never quite sure what direction HE will take us in next. I will go back to this blog over the next few days and clear up some typos and character errors on about three or four previous posts which I just published to get them out and done. Besides that this blog is closed.

Murder in the Cathedral

"God's law does not reduce, much less do away with human freedom; rather, it protects and promotes that freedom. In contrast, however, some present-day cultural tendencies have given rise to several currents of thought in ethics which centre upon an alleged conflict between freedom and law. These doctrines would grant to individuals or social groups the right to determine what is good or evil. Human freedom would thus be able to "create values" and would enjoy a primacy over truth, to the point that truth itself would be considered a creation of freedom. Freedom would thus lay claim to a moral autonomy which would actually amount to an absolute sovereignty."[1]
In T.S. Eliot's "Murder in the Cathedral" this reader is convinced that the driving force behind the murder of the Archbishop was the evil known today as politically correctness taken to it radical extreme. In his apologia the second Knight makes the comment "No one regrets for violence more than we do. Unhappily, there are times when violence is the only way in which social justice can be secured."[2] As Eliot eludes to unless motives are grounded in Love and Truth, which ultimately are from God, mankind in trying to serve the god of human respect and political correctness will always fold in upon it’s plan ending in evil. For as long as mankind tries to justify itself in relation to other created beings and not the Creator, Who is Love and Truth, chaos will most always ensue as actions and choices are taken to their historic and logical culmination. To make matters worse in an vain attempt to cast off the blame of their murderous action the killers, as many in society currently, on to others in the statement "We have been instrumental in bringing about the state of affairs that you approve"[3]. Thus lacking the integrity to be responsible for their own actions. This is not surprising though as moral integrity is a hallmark trait of the disciple of Jesus Christ which these murders were not though they may have played lip service to the name Christian for personal gain or prestige.
In an interesting contrast to the motives and actions of the killers this reader noticed that the Archbishop relied heavily, as he should, from the Lucan passage regarding persecution[4] and the instructions of Our Lord.
The killers go on to vainly justify their actions like children would say 'he made me mad so he made me do it' in the statements "He used every means of provocation; from his conduct...".[5] They go on further with the ludicrous statement "...when he had deliberately exasperated us beyond human endurance....he could have kept himself from us long enough to allow our righteous anger to cool. That was just what he did not wish to happen, he insisted, while we were still inflamed with wrath."[6] Thus the logic of evil falls apart in the 'justification' of said evil action to one of a childlike excuse and devaluating proposed logic their actions through their own words. Sin and evil are rightfully referred to as things which pull the soul down to a lesser dignity than the Lord God of Hosts created us to live in. The decisions and resulting action of the Archbishop's murders and their banal attempt for justification show, at least, to this reader a example in literary prose of the evil conclusion of moral relativism in which truth is only relevant to the individual and there are no moral absolutes. The same justification used by the murders of the Archbishop in "Murder in the Cathedral" was used by the Nazi's to exterminate human beings and is used today by 'modern and intelligent society' to "justify" the slaughter of millions of innocents in abortion and euthanasia. Evil is justified for a common social 'good' and then hidden in the dark recesses of excuses citing the betterment of a society or class rather than the dignity of the human person. Thus, the Archbishop is dead as are countless millions who question the Divine Truth over individual desires. Rather than allowing Divine Truth reigning supreme the killers in Eliot's play and society today choose to serve a lesser god of relativism and selfish desire.
The clarion call of the killers is similar to that of society which values the imperfect and temporary justice of man over the perfect and eternal Justice of God. In their Confiteor the killers echo the words of society. For we value, many times, the feeble opinions of man over the eternal Wisdom of Almighty God.
"Forgive us, O Lord, we acknowledge ourselves as type of the common man, of the men and women who shut the door and sit by the fire; who fear the blessing of God, the loneliness of the night of God, the surrender required, the deprivation inflicted; WHO FEAR THE INJUSTICE OF MEN LESS THAN THE JUSTICE OF GOD...."[7]
Possibly the killers and society today would be much better served to go back to the words of the 4th century Ambrosian hymn, the "Te Deum", which was sung during the final scene in Eliot's play and pay close attention to it's words for we ultimately answer to God and must beg for His Mercy and help to follow He who is Truth[8].

“Just As I Am”

“Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so to win over as many as possible”[1]

In reading “Just As I Am” by Dr. Billy Graham what strikes this reader is that Graham has become a slave to all for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how the Lord Jesus used Graham as His Instrument. There can be no mistake that the Lord God has and continues to use Graham to act as an agent of Divine Mercy to a world which so desperately needs the Merciful Hand of God.
One of the things that impressed me was how Graham prepared the way spiritually far in advance of a potential crusade in order to open the right doors and soften hearts. In speaking of his desire to go to India[2] Graham writes “…I had prayed that someday God might open the door for us to go there”. Graham knew then as he does today the importance of spiritual preparation prior to any work that God calls us to do in order to be more effective. Like Nehemiah[3] from Biblical times Graham used prayer as an effective weapon to change the hearts of those he was about to meet with. It is God who can change the hearts and minds of people not a effective preaching style or even a virtuous life however through the Lord God of Hosts hearts and minds can be softened and changed so that He can use us in a manner which brings Him glory and honor and thus souls are won for the King.
“Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God”.[4] I also saw from Graham’s book that despite the misconception between well intentioned Protestants and Catholics that both can work together effectively for the greater glory of God so to win souls. Far too often we get bogged down on items that while they may be important take our focus away from proclaiming Jesus Christ Crucified and Risen to the farthest corners of the world. Graham writes about his experience working with Catholic Christians that “ [it] taught me that most people were not going to take us seriously if we spent all our time debating our differences instead of uniting at the Cross”.[5] He writes prior to that statement that “Protestants and Catholics- were slowly growing in our understanding of each other and of our mutual commitment to those teachings we hold in common”.[6] One of the oldest tactics in warfare is the concept of divide and conquer and the father of all lies being a excellent and intelligent tactician tries to ensnare well intentioned Christians into backbiting and inter-religious infighting in order to take our focus of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ thereby endangering not only the souls of others but our own souls also in pulling us into the pit of hatred and darkness. Graham as most faithful Christian leaders know that at this critical junction in the history of humankind that all Christians must keep their focus upon the Cross of the Crucified One. Souls depend upon each of us rising above self and looking to the Cross and proclaiming with loud united voices that the only hope for the world and for individual souls comes from Our Lord Jesus Christ.
It came to me in prayer recently that God uses the ordinary events and circumstances in our lives to manifest His infinite power and glory. It is in those ordinary coincidences of life that God working through a soul(s) can be transformed into extraordinary opportunities of grace and blessing. Only God can take the countless seemingly meaningless encounters in our day and create them to better serve Him. One such example in “Just As I Am” that I can quickly recall is the story of when Graham was at the Urbana Missions Conference and suffered a life threatening thrombophlebitis[7]. A medical student just happened to be right there who quickly ascertained the danger and helped Graham receive the life saving help he needed. God planted that young medical student in that place at that time to serve His glory. The story continues though as the medical student later becomes even a better physician by going to the Mayo Clinic for advanced studies and so again the world has a better physician who can act as an instrument of God’s healing power to a hurting world. A chance encounter between two souls on fire for the Lord Jesus and now I can only imagine the number of spiritual and physical healings that have taken place because these two men allowed God to take the ordinary and make it extra ordinary. The other encounter of note is that of the encounters between John Foster Dulles and Graham. While lives and souls benefited then and now from the obvious encounters they had it is interesting to note that the young Avery Dulles did go on to a vocation as a Jesuit priest and years later was created cardinal by Pope John Paul II and is recognized as one of the greatest Christian theological minds alive today. These are but a few of the many chance encounters where God is allowed to work and souls are transformed through His grace. In the book “The Practice of the Presence of God” there is a quote from a conversation with Brother Lawrence which I feel is fitting to shine further light upon the subject of how God is glorified through the ordinary events of our lives.
“That relying on the infinite merits of Our Lord, we should, with complete confidence, ask for His grace regardless of our sins, that God never failed to grant us His grace in each action; that he [Brother Lawrence] perceived this clearly and never failed to do so unless he was distracted from the presence of God, or he had forgotten to ask Him for His aid. That in time of doubt God never failed to enlighten us when we had no other purpose but to please Him and act for His love. That our sanctification depended not upon changing our works but in doing for God what we ordinarily do for ourselves. That it was a pitty to see how many people always mistake the means for the end, attaching great importance to certain works that they do very imperfectly for reasons of human respect. That he found the best way of reaching God was by doing ordinary tasks, which he was obligated to perform under obedience, entirely for the love of God and not for the human attitude towards them.”[8]
In trying to quickly answer the question posed is ‘Just as I am’ a Christian classic I would say that as far as contemporary Christian literature goes then yes the book would certainly qualify. If the book meets the test of time and the discerning eyes of future generations would be a question best posed to The One Whom is outside time and knows the future. I would say that it has many of the characteristics of a potential classic in Christian literature but will let time play itself out to determine the fate of the book. We can only hope that other generations find the book to be one of inspiration and grace as I did.
In closing this reader found it interesting that Graham, and I dare say most Christian leaders would agree, stated that one of his regrets was to not grow closer to Christ in the time he was allotted in life. All the sermons, works and numerous conversions through Graham and other Christian leaders and we come back to the central focus of why we are created—to love and serve the Lord in this life so as to be with Him in the next. If a important Christian leader like Graham can have the devotion and the humility to state that the most important aspect of our lives is to draw close and be conformed to the Crucified One then all of us should take notice and follow his wise words. God is love and all the works even those of God are in vain if we do not put on Christ daily and draw closer into His Heart burning with love.
“If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and knowledge, if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away over everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing…..When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man I put aside childish things…..but the greatest of these is love.”[9]

Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine focuses Book II of his “Confessions” with a humble examination of his past life prior to his Augustine draws on the critical element of self knowledge and through that examination the acknowledgment of his own sinfulness. Before Divine Light can permeate the intellect the soul must first gain a healthy fear of the Lord for it is only through knowledge of our sins and imperfections in contrast to His eternal perfection that we can hope to be infused with Light. The exact nature I feel of Augustine’s sins for the reader today (or even then) are not as important, I feel, as the fact that he openly examined his conscience and realizing his unworthiness confessed his sins and failings and begged God for His Mercy.
I found it interesting that Augustine several times brings to bear that it was not God who left his side but Augustine who turned and rebelled from the Holy One. Augustine at one point refers to knots that he has tied through the years. I find that so interesting for in the past few years since my own re-conversion I too have discovered so many ‘knots of rebellion’ that I tied. The God of Love and Mercy can untie all those knots and can create the earth (the soul) anew despite the entanglements we acquire. I think though that God does not nor, I dare say, can not untie those knots of rebellion in the soul who freely chooses the other rather than He. I feel this is the case for God will not take away free will because of His Infinite Justice. Like Augustine and so many who have strayed God waits for the soul to turn to Him, even slightly, so that He may forgive and heal the soul. God never leaves and never stops loving each of us though we can leave His Grace through our own sins. Yet, like He did with Augustine, He waits and allows us to tie ourselves in knots knowing that in time we will cry out for Divine Mercy.
Augustine goes on in Books XII and XIII to speak of the creation story. My personal view is that Augustine focused on this primarily as he was now, having confessed his sins and received Divine Mercy, a new creation. In Book III of “Imitation of Christ” Thomas a’ Kempis has a prayer for the enlightenment of the mind which part of it is fitting here. “Command the winds and storms, say to the sea, ‘Be still’; and to the north wind, ‘Blow not’; and a great calm shall ensue. Send forth Thy light and Thy truth, that they may shine upon the earth; for I am as the earth that is empty and void, until Thou enlighten me. Pour forth Thy grace from above. Water my heart with the dew of Heaven. Send down the waters of devotion to wash the face of the earth, to bring forth good and perfect fruit.”
It is quite natural that Augustine who was created anew through the mercy of God would focus so heavily on the creation story. I can only imagine that after reflecting upon his conversion and the previous years of rebellion that Augustine’s mind now infused with Divine Grace was in a state of awe at the opus Dei within his life. We like Augustine merit nothing but a sure punishment for our sins and evil ways yet to the soul who confesses and begs for mercy He washes away our tears, heals our wounds, unties our knots and brings us into His banquet of love. God did great things with and through Augustine because Augustine rebuked his own selfish pride (he died to self) and thereby it was through his weakness that God was strongest. A lesson I feel I need to take from Augustine is that I should not trust in my own ability for “I am as the earth” but in The One who grants “abundant life”.
Augustine uses the phrase in his ‘Confessions’ which I feel applies not only to him but to myself and so many of us who discover the God of Love and his mission for each of us- “Late have I loved Thee”. It is the realization that despite our own rebellion and wanderings of various sorts that He has always been there loving us, waiting for us and in many souls as Francis Thompson writes in the poem “The Hound of Heaven”- He pursues us tirelessly. “…’All which I took from thee I did but take, not for thy harms, but just that thou might’st seek it in My arms. All of which thy child’s mistake fancies as lost, I have stored for thee at home: rise, clasp my hand, and come!’ Halts by me that footfall: is my gloom after all, shade of His hand outstretched caressingly! ‘Ah, fondest, blindest, weakest, I am He Whom thou seekest! Thou dravest love from thee, who dravest Me.” I wonder if Augustine would have become such a great Saint of God had he not seen his own depravity and been allowed to venture into the darkness so that when the caught by the Hound of Heaven he could appreciate the Light even more and serve Him better. Like Augustine did in his ‘Confessions’ if we humble ourselves and stoop beneath the mighty Hand of God then He Himself will lift us up and create us anew.

“Spiritual Leadership”

Interpretation of the 10 Principles from Chapter 12 of “Spiritual Leadership” by J. Oswald Sanders with Biblical and Non Biblical References.

I. The Biblical writer Qoheleth writes in Chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes that “there is and appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens, a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant….”[1] The first principle that I feel that Sanders gives the reader of his chapter on “The Leader and Time” is that the leader and in fact each Christian must understand the brevity and the gift of time. We are created for eternity and the choices we make to live in His love and follow His Will in the allotted time that we are given determine the destination of ourselves and other when we pass beyond the door of our earthly life into eternity. Because time is a gift given to the soul by God to be used prudently for the building of the Kingdom and to aid in the continual conversion of and sanctification of our souls we must take advantage of this short time we have. St James[2] refers to the sin of presumption[3] in speaking of people who assume they have many days or years yet squander the gift of time today and endanger their soul[4]. An understanding of time as a gift which is passing quickly[5] and shall not be repeated will aid the leader in more effective time management there by making them through God’s grace a more productive disciple for His Kingdom.
II. Sanders indicates that the leader must ‘carefully select priorities’ to more effectively break open this gift of allotted time that we have been given and there by bear more fruit for our Divine Sovereign. This can be accomplished in several methods by setting and revising short, medium and long range objectives to correspond with an updated ‘to do list’. In 2nd Chronicles 29 we see the prophet Nathan and others giving a set of priorities which needed to be fulfilled. Furthermore, in Nehemiah[6] we see a well organized man of God setting priorities to better meet the objective. In leadership and in so many other areas in setting priorities to better maximize our time we need to remember the old maxim to “pick and choose our battles”. There will always be battles and important tasks needed to be met by the leader the key in setting priorities is to use the gift of discernment and pray for the grace to choose our tasks and battles in priority setting.
III., IV., V. Sanders goes on to give three additional principles in time management for the God centered leader which are strategic steps, measured steps and never being hurried. The example in the Bible of strategic and measured planning comes from the prophet Ezekiel[7] and others. God is clearly very logical in his Divine Will for us and in following His Will we too must carefully, prayerfully and strategically plan so as to insure we are maximizing our time and talents for His greater glory. The concept of never being hurried has a variety of reasons for being important which would be from maximizing productivity—which in this case in souls for the King of Kings[8]. It would also aid in increasing usable time for other priorities, decreasing stress, increasing enjoyment and maximizing quality. While we will all face times of great stress, suffering[9] and anxiety[10] we need not create an environment which increases these thing which can lead us and others away from God. As Sanders points out in reference to the text of the wedding feast at Cana passage[11] even Our Lord Himself knew the importance of not hurrying the Divine Plan and so too we must. I borrow again from an old idiom to close this selection of principles in the words “haste makes waste”[12].
VI. This is a good point to bring up the next principle which Sanders discusses being the submission to the Divine Will. The Father in His infinite Wisdom and Love has a clear plan for the sanctification of our souls, those around us and to meet the temporal needs of His children who live within His Divine Will. It is in the submission to the Will of God and within His commandments that we find joy and can meet the needs and plans of our days. Just as the Psalmist sang of the joy of the Lord on a ten string lyre[13] we too find our ultimate joy in the 10 commandments[14] and the Divine Will. As the Lord Jesus tells us[15] we pray not for our will be done but rather for the Father’s Will to be done. It is the loving Father who can see the future and the needs of the day and desires the best for us[16] today and then and in eternity with Him[17]. So Sanders correctly points out that the best priority and time management comes from following completely the Will of God daily.
VII. Sanders picks up another key principle in time management in the God centered leader in speaking on the subject of interruptions and distractions. Sanders recognizes that there are time when distractions and interruptions are times when either God wants to use us for His glory, say in witnessing to others, or when God needs us to begin a new task or convey a message to us. Some of the spiritual masters such as St John of the Cross[18], St Theresa of Avila[19] and St Ignatius of Loyola[20] speak of times when a distraction or interruption actually turns out to be an moment when God is giving us a message about Himself or something. It is also true that the evil one[21] can cause distraction and interruption in our lives trying to prevent us from carrying out the Divine plan. Finally we know too that as mere creatures we can cause our own distractions or that in others without any help from God[22] or Satan. That is why great discernment and prayer and a balanced life is needed to carefully gage the situation individually. If we have poorly prepared or have poorly managed our time and not spent quality time encountering the True and Living God in prayer then we will not only not be able to judge the source of the interruption but we may miss an opportunity for grace in our lives or the lives of others.
VIII. Spiritual leadership is similar and different from temporal leadership in that the spiritual leader must always spend time in prayer constantly in order to know and do the Will of God. We can use the best time management strategies known to man and have ever organizing device there is and if we are not following God’s Holy Will we will be at best ineffective and even a counter productive element in the Kingdom. The only way to know the Divine Will is through constant quality time in prayer[23] and then through the Sacred Scripture and other sources. There will be times when our schedules will be so busy that there is no way to accomplish the task of the day or His mission. While many times that is poor planning on our part occasionally it has been arranged like that by God so that we have to fly to Him in prayer and then we see results that we could not have accomplished without prayer. Prayer time for the leader must be a time that is set in the schedule and preferably the same place each day- such as the early morning[24] before the day begins. A scheduled prayer time and various other scheduled times in the day for a smaller amount of prayer sets up regular appointments with God that He can use to give greater fruit to our work. If we structure our day around our encounters with God in prayer[25] then quickly the rest of our time management issues begin to fade away[26] and we become more productive than before.
IX. Sanders brings up another important principle in the need the achieve balance in the life of the leader which greatly contributes to increased time management and productivity. I enjoyed the idea of John Wesley who would break his day into five minute segments. I think that if we were to seriously look at the amount of time we spent per day or per week on needless things we could spend more time in service to Him, more time with family, more time in prayer and so on. We each have our temptation which can be too much time on the telephone, the internet, on television, in un important books or in trivial conversation, etc. A good evaluation of time spent on an occasional basis can free up the schedule and the leader just as a good examination of conscience can help free up the soul of the sin and evil taking hold in various areas of the soul. Balance creates harmony and peace and helps the leader and a individual soul to be a more effective child of God and serve Him better. A balanced life with work/ study, prayer, rest, recreation, worship, family, friends are like the even and fair scales spoke about in the Psalm[27]—it is from the Lord and therefore is good.
X. The final principle which I took from Sanders is a warning for all of us that being to avoid at all costs procrastination. Sanders writes that “procrastination the thief of time, is one of the devil’s most potent weapons for defrauding us of our eternal heritage.”[28] We find God and God’s Will for us in the tasks and duties of the present moment.[29] We need not try to please and serve the Good God tomorrow for that is in Divine Providence for that day that may or may not come. Besides having an awareness of our past sins and short comings and lessons we have committed or learned from in the past we must entrust the past with it’s joys and sorrows with it’s good and evil into Divine Mercy. Today God is present for us at this moment[30] and it is with this realization and for the love of Him Whom we should love above all things and creatures that we can fight the noon day devil of procrastination and avoid the sin of presuming that we can carry out His Will or grow closer to him in the ‘morrow. We are called to be faithful sons and daughters of the Most High today in all of our activities and to all those we meet. In our time management we do the task before us until it is done then if and when the next day comes we move to the next task He sets before us. In a word we are called to be faithful each day. “Work with cheerfulness, with peace, in the presence of God. In this way you will also carry out your task with common sense. You will carry it through to the end. Though tiredness is beating you down, you will finish it off well; and your works will be pleasing to God”[31]
The Lord Jesus calls us today to do certain tasks for Him. These tasks range from family obligations to work to school to Church and things that to the created eye seem mundane and unimportant yet if we are living within the Divine Will and in a life with the Crucified and Risen One these things can be very important to the mission that He gives us to do. To procrastinate in these daily tasks in many ways is akin to the Lord calling us[32] and for us to come up with a laundry list why we can not and he moves on. The potential disciple is left while the work of the Kingdom goes forward. Procrastination is deadly[33] to the soul[34] and deadly to any leadership position.[35] Constant vigilance must be kept to avoid this and if one falls into the trap to pick up quickly and move on.
I close with the poem by Robert Herrick[36] which seems to fit well in this paper on the need for time management in Christian leadership and by all followers of Christ. That we may manage our time better so as to serve Him more fully let us pray that He will guide us and assist us in our shortcomings and better take advantage of this gift of time He has granted to us.

“GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he 's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,

10 Biblical Leaders I Admire

Leading off with the number one position would of course have to be the ultimate leader and Shepherd of souls[1] Our Lord Jesus Christ. We see in Christ Jesus leadership which both chastises[2] and heals[3], love which is both tender and tuff, words which bring comfort and which cut like a knife into the soul. We see a leader who inspires the leadership even in those to whom the world would not associate as potential leaders. Our Lord knows the potential for the soul. He knows that there is a time to heal and forgive and a time to chastise and condemn. We see in Jesus Christ who is the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity[4] that yes God is love and love evolves sacrifice at time. Love is also looking for the best of the individual receiving love not just allowing behavior which would lead the person—the soul into destruction. Our Lord shows us that God way of loving the soul (which we are called to emulate) for the long term benefit of the individual not just a short term gain and certainly not for a selfish motive. Love[5] is a verb alas and Christian leadership must be centered always upon love. As we are creatures and just mere images of our Divine Creator we will fall short however we must look to the ultimate example of leadership in Our Lord Jesus Christ to give us the strength and the courage to face our weaknesses and through His grace[6] overcome to become the Christian leaders He calls us to be.
The next ideal Christian leader for me was a Biblical leader who did not lead a great multitude of people yet through his prayer and example inspired a nation and subsequent generations to turn to God and away from sin and evil. I look to the prophet of God Elijah. Elijah like so many leaders had the role thrust upon him and it frightened him. Facing seemingly insurmountable odds through the grace and mercy of God he defeated the false prophets of Baal and so many others.[7] Elijah comes into town like an old western hired gun for the Lord God of Hosts[8] and once his mission is accomplished realizes the gravity of his situation and retreats to prayer to gain courage and wisdom to fight another day for Him[9]. To myself Elijah shows that the Christian leader will face times when it seems as if the entire world is out against him or her and desires their death yet we turn to The One whom we know can ‘come to our assistance’ and protect us within the shadow of His wings to struggle for the Kingdom another day. Just as Christ Our Lord turned to prayer constantly Elijah also sets the example for us that through prayer to God if we are faithful we can do all things.
St. Peter[10] is an interesting leader as in by all accounts he was not the most successful fisherman around and he denied Christ yet it was his humility along with the infinite mercy of God that he was still called by Christ to be the rock solid foundation[11] upon which Christ would build Christianity. St Peter shows me that despite our failings and even sins if we beg for mercy and forgiveness and reengage in the struggle to serve that God can accomplish anything He desires in the lives of those who are humble. Alone we are destined to fail and without Jesus Christ we have no hope of temporal success for His Kingdom much less in obtaining salvation and partaking in the Beatific Vision. Through Him and with Him we find the courage and strength to rise up to any task no matter how great. We have only to trust and remain in His love. If we count on our own abilities and become filled with pride we will fall just as St. Peter fell after Our Lord was arrested. Through Christ and in humility we find the ability to accomplish any mission He sets before. The mark of any good Christian leader is humility in recognizing where and from Whom we draw our ability and gifts.
Christian leadership more than any other type of leadership involves a great amount of trust in God and I feel that one of the Biblical leaders who demonstrated this unwavering trust is Abraham. God calls each of us as Christians and as Christian leaders to face times when we are called to do the seemingly impossible. We are called to do what He wants and we do not always know the reason why. This involves trust and faith in Divine Providence that God will provide the answers and solutions at the moment when we need it the most. Abraham demonstrated that trust when he took his son to the top of the mountain to prepare to offer him in sacrifice to God. Sacred Scripture tells us that God desires Mercy not sacrifice and the son was spared and Abraham proved his faith and trust to God but most importantly to himself and others through the generations. God knew in His infinite wisdom of the faithfulness of Abraham yet Abraham and later generations did not—a test was in order. The Christian leader and each individual Christian will face tests in life of various sorts yet we must have faith and trust in Him[12] Whom we love and serve. God knows of our ability yet we need to under go the test in order to shine more brightly for Him as the fine metal in the furnace. God can not work great things through us without our cooperation, as He will not violate our free will, if we as Christian leaders do not have faith and trust and step into the unknown with Him as Abraham did.
Within the heart of the successful Christian leader is a hunger for souls to be lead to God also known as apostolic zeal. At root in any real apostolic zeal is the recognition of our complete and total dependence on God and His Mercy despite our past sins and failings and present weaknesses. The Apostle St. Paul demonstrates this recognition of his own weakness and unworthiness and that it is only He Who dwells within that accomplishes the endeavor. Temporal leadership is based on many times our own abilities and accomplishments as I pointed out earlier yet the Christian leader must pour himself out completely to put on the mind of Christ so despite impossible weaknesses or obstacles can through Divine grace accomplish the Will of God.[13]
Some of the other Biblical leaders that I admire would be St. John the beloved for his absolute love of Christ and the purity of his heart. It is interesting that Christian tradition holds that all the apostles were martyred but one St John. He did suffer in prison and exile and was even boiled yet he was not martyred. Because of his purity and love for Christ he was spared the martyrs death. His example of the love for God should inspire Christian leaders to find refuge within the Heart of Jesus and place our heads upon His breast and draw the courage and comfort needed to lead His flock. It should also serve as an example to Christian leaders of all traditions to seek and strive after purity of heart, mind and body so that in seeing the Face of God we can better witness to His glory to a world in darkness. I would also have to say that Moses would be a favorite Biblical leader in the faith that he demonstrated so many times before during and after the Exodus. Moses too shows a great amount of zeal and a leadership style we need to emulate which is centered on prayer to God Almighty.
The next Biblical leader that I would identify as one whom I admire would be someone many may not think of –that being the foster father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, St. Joseph[14]. St. Joseph does not speak much in the Sacred Scripture yet he must have been a great leader to be entrusted by God[15] to care for the Divine Child[16] and the Mother of God[17]. I can not imagine the great faith that he had to be able to accept that this child that his betrothed wife had was from God even when sent an angelic messenger[18]. He demonstrated great trust in God though he did not know all the answers. He was given the responsibility to protect the child Jesus by fleeing into Egypt[19] and throughout His early formative years. Good parents are the best Christian leaders and St. Joseph must have been a very good father and leader to be given the call to be the foster father of Jesus Christ. St. Joseph to me also demonstrates that to the humble and the obedient God can bring about great miracles. He faced his Divinely given duty with great prudence and with an unwavering trust in the Wisdom and Providence of God. To me St. Joseph models what Christian leaders and parents should follow in an unshakable faith and obedience to the call of God regardless if we do not know the reason why –now.
I would close out my list of ten leaders with ‘The Forerunner’, St John the Baptist. St John the Baptist knew that he was just a creature called through grace for a mission and that he was unimportant compared to the One who would follow[20]. St John demonstrated the courage to leave all behind in worldly allurements for the sake of proclaiming the coming of the Messiah. St. John just like the earlier prophet Jeremiah became a pillar of brass and a wall of iron[21] to withstand the attacks of the world so as to proclaim the Day of the Lord with zeal and fervor. In a simple way he knew his mission and Whom he served and did not care about the consequences or the opinions of others. Once he had fulfilled his mission he quickly stepped down from his position as the center of attention to give glory and honor to the Lamb of God[22]. He like the other leaders mentioned was faithful to the end. Christian leaders must recognize that we at best are temporary servants entrusted to a specific mission for a specific time and The One Who called us is more important that we are. We need to pray to be obedient enough that when it is our time to hand over the reigns of leadership to others that we will do so out of love for Christ and the sake of the Gospel which we proclaim. We may not be called to survive on locust and honey[23] but we are called to reject the world and it’s entrapments for the sake of Christ and announces to the world the Salvific action of Jesus Christ regardless of the cost[24].
10 Biblical leaders each with different missions and in different times yet through love of God they changed the course of human history in many ways. If we remain faithful and love God above all else then we too can in some small way model the leadership of these ten in the mission He gives us today.

“Spiritual Administration Vs. Spiritual Leadership: Beans, Bullets and Bad-guys”

In examining the differences between the gifts of leadership and administration I reflected on my time in the Marine Corps and the role of the tactician/ field commander and the role of the logistician/ echelon commander. Both roles are vital in the implementation of war fighting strategies and battlefield success. Both roles have cross over duties which are applicable to the other yet radically different in their approach and short range mission objectives. However, though short range mission objectives and tasks are different they both work towards the same long range overall mission objective. Similarly the leader as defined by Hocking[1], et al, fulfills more of the field commander role (tactician) in the still very real spiritual war within his/ her area of charge. The logistician conversely would fulfill the role of administrator in the spiritual battles[2] which the Church engages in.
As a Marine one of the many acronyms which we had to memorize in regards to battle preparation what “BBB” “Beans, Bullets and Bad-guys”[3]. The leader and the administrator even to a higher degree must take into consideration the three B’s of logistics to help the local Church better fight the spiritual battles which rage around (and occasionally within) Her.
The shepherd must be concerned not only with the long range mission objective, i.e. guiding the souls under his/ her charge into the safe harbor of the Beatific Vision and bringing a greater harvest of souls along with them but also with the logistics of guiding the flock through the daily rocky shoals that come up. Shepherds must be concerned with the temporal and spiritual needs of the flock that Our Lord has entrusted to them always mindful of the fact that they are but mere stewards of the souls today and that the Almighty One is the ultimate and eternal commander. So borrowing from the acronym I mentioned previously the “beans” that the shepherd must be concerned with is if his/ her flock is being cared for temporally (physically and emotionally). Are there members of the local Church in need? Has someone suffered hardships and needs the support of the shepherd and or the flock in general? Does the individual soul or family need support to deal with loss or emotional issues? These questions and potential problems not only effect the short range effectiveness and vitality of the local Church but if not treated can lead to spiritual ramifications in which the soul(s) leave the flock and could fall victim to the wolves in the non Christian world. The administrator would be concerned for the logistical issues with the “beans” however so should the leader- both have a responsibility to God as shepherds and as Christians to feed the poor, cloth the naked and give comfort to the afflicted.[4]
The shepherd must be concerned with basic war fighting[5] strategies and give his/ her flock the tools (the “bullets”) to engage the enemy who after all is a master strategist though he is the father of lies. The battle as St Paul tells us is ‘not one of flesh and blood’ (though history does show in the blood of the martyrs that a pound of flesh is exacted from the Bride of Christ occasionally) ‘but of principalities and powers’[6]. The “bullets” then that we Christians use and must be trained to use are the sword of the Spirit (which is the Word of God) and our prayers. In treating the use of prayer as a potent weapon I remember the axiom of praying for our enemies and to pray unceasingly. We study the Word of God and we constantly spend regular time in prayer so that when God needs to use us we are prepared. As the archer prepares the arrows[7] to be used at just the proper time so to do we study the Divine Word and encounter God in prayer while constantly rending our hearts to remove impurities and sin so that we too may be one of those polished arrows that the Almighty One places in His quiver. The shepherd be they gifted with leadership or administration must therefore move “Dei populus”[8] (“God’s people”) into a constant state of conversion where by they study with greater zeal and pray with greater love so that they may be ready at anytime to engage the enemy of souls. The leader in this aspect would be concerned with the vision of the faith community and in achieving the marked goals set forth. The leader must be just as concerned with the individual progression of a soul as with the spiritual objectives of the people God has gathered for Himself. Conversely the administrator keeping in mind the overall mission must be concerned with the daily operation of the Christian community/ individual soul to guarantee that the mission is not compromised due to mismanagement of the seemingly mundane details. Both roles are vital in the operation of the community and in the stewardship of the souls under his/ her charge[9]. The leader might have programs or initiatives while the administrator would handle the task management of one or many programs. One gift it seems builds upon the other and visa versa.
Lest we forget who is the enemy[10] and the potential tragic consequences[11] of our failure to exercise the gift of administration or leadership we must constantly remind ourselves of the very serious nature of the mission before us. Far too frequently the person gifted with administration can fall into the trap set by the evil one of over management and single minded task orientated administration and fail to set vision for the flock entrusted to him/ her. Administration with out the constant influx of vision from the Eternal One is simply basic business management as one would see in the secular world. The administrator focuses so much on the tasks of daily administration that he/ she fails to shepherd. Ministry quickly becomes a business and lack the flowing fire of the Holy Spirit which emblazes the soul to new possibilities in evangelization and the Divine vision for the community. This over administration by the person gifted by administration can manifest it self in what Segundo Galilea refers[12] to as the demon of activism[13] and is dangerous to the soul of the minister and the flock entrusted to him/ her. On more of a psychological/ spiritual perspective the activism takes root in the perfectionism and false pride[14] of the individual. The evil one who Christian tradition tells us personally tempts each soul strikes at the soul of the administrator burying them in meetings/ tasks and paperwork. Eventually though the administrator is successful in his or her business affairs the sin of a false pride creeps in and then lacking the Divine vision tasks and souls that were under the charge of the minister gifted with administration begin to fall like leaves from an autumn tree. Even skilled business administration lacking the Divine infusion pales in comparison to Divinely infused administration which transforms souls, organizations and individual Churches. We do not need another skilled business administrator in the Christian world but Divinely infused administrators who are connected to the quiet movements[15] of the Holy Spirit.
Conversely the leader must be ever vigilant to not under manage or over delegate tasks to others with only vision for the community in mind. While the minister gifted with leadership may have great vision for a community and can delegate tasks they must always insure that projects are met in detail through periodic examinations and reevaluations. Many a battle has been lost by leaders with great battle skills and vision yet without the needed logistical support in the day to day operation of the battle force. Battles and wars are won through strategic vision and planning and in strategic logistics one without the other leads inevitably to the loss of troops. In the case of the spiritual warfare[16] which the minister and all Christians fight the loss of troops is the loss of souls. The minister gifted with spiritual leadership falls and causes other souls to fall in this instance through a ‘demon of messianism’[17] in which vision becomes one of what the individual minister desires and not what the Holy Will deigns for the community. Again the root of this false and fatal spirit finds itself in pride[18] and in the lack of prudence and discernment on the part of the minister. It is a very easy trap to fall into for any Christian leader and one should not be overly critical when the minister steps into this trap[19]. The counter balance for this is similar to the counter balance for the administrator prayer, detachment and examination of the daily operation of the ministry short term objectives.
I am increasingly becoming aware that regardless of the special gift given by God to the minister be it in administration or leadership that the minister must constantly pray for an increase[20] in the gifts of the Holy Spirit[21] that are available in superabundance[22] to all Christians. Gifts and fruits such as discernment, prudence, patience, self control ect must be increased and fully activated to help the minister better use the other gifts.
In relation to the question regarding if the administrator/ leader can carry out the task of the other my simple answer is yes with a condition. The minister regardless of which gift they have must exercise that gift and build upon it using those seven gifts of the Holy Spirit[23] which I touched upon in the previous paragraph. The minister must further challenge his or her self to recognize the areas of potential weakness[24] and use the tools which God provides[25]. Just as the Lord Jesus speaks of in the parable of the talents[26] we too as His faithful servants must build upon the gifts which we have been given so to bring glory to the King and His Kingdom. So, the administrator must first and foremost be a person of deep prayer[27] and grounded in Sacred Scripture[28] and also build up leadership traits even through secular education opportunities. Similarly the leader must be a person of prayer[29] and the Word and build up upon areas of weakness in administration skills to better guide the flock or ministry entrusted to them[30]. God many times I have found gives us tools to use that can work for His Glory that we might have other wise dismissed so that His Kingdom can be built up and His Will be manifested in others[31]. Very often the answer to the problem is before us if we only pray that we are open to the opportunities[32] with the eyes of faith.[33] Therefore, we must pray unceasingly for an increase of faith, hope and love that regardless if we have been given the gift of administration, leadership or any of the other gifts that we can bring back a bounty of souls before the Throne of God. For alas the only reward for the Christian leader or the Christian administrator should be the words of Our Merciful Savior on the final day- “'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful…”![34]

No Man's Land...........

Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and Forever!
I find my self now in no man's land. I have gone too far with Our Lord and He has shown me too much to turn back yet I can not move forward. It is not so much that I don't want to move forward but rather that there are unknowns that only He knows.
Each of us have been called by God to a particular life. Each of us have certain gifts and certain flaws. God does not create the flaws mind you but He does build on them for His glory. Grace builds upon nature. So, as I have found myself many times before I stand now at a crossroad. I stand today with arms outstretched in love and surrender to God. It is not important today what He tells me tomorrow or the next day. It is not important how He will accomplish in me what He desires. Divine Providence is not for tomorrow but for today. Today I trust in Christ Jesus and say yes. Tomorrow will take care of it's self then.
The world is filled with darkness many times. I was reminded recently that what we must do is look for the light and we will be drawn into the light. If we search for darkness we will find it and it will take over us. Especially in the souls we encounter daily there will be many that we will have to search hard to find some faint light within- but we must search for it and focus on it. So, we look to the future with hope rather than with trepidation and fear. We come to crossroads and we find joy for our hope and joy rests in the Eternal Word- the Eternal Hope- the Eternal Joy who is Jesus Christ.
It is not prudent on a public forum to discuss the particulars right now. I only ask you to please remember me in your prayers. Look to Our Lord Jesus Christ and trust in Him.

“A Christian perspective on AIDS/ HIV and Homosexuality: Divine Punishment or a manmade created evil produced by iniquity.”

Initially I must confess that my reaction was yes: AIDS and HIV are a Divine Punishment[1] for the sin of homosexuality[2] in the world. However this standpoint presents problematic in the innocent who suffer as a result of this disease as in the case of children, healthcare workers infected, blood transfusion recipients and victims of sexual crimes such as rape. I began to ponder that if this was a Divine Punishment for homosexuals then why would they be the only ones affected. God in His Infinite Wisdom would certainly see that a blood borne illness would affect countless scores of innocents. This question led me to question the entire notion of suffering within the world and why many times it is the innocent as well as the guilty who suffer greatly.[3] I also began to ponder that if Divine Justice[4] in the form of an illness was exacted as a chastisement[5] upon mankind would not many other crimes against the Almighty One be also similarly exacted upon mankind. Crimes (sins) such as abortion[6], unjust wars[7], terrorism[8], violence[9] against the innocent, genocide[10], racism[11] and the like seem to go unpunished by God while the voices of the innocent cry out to Him. Would not Divine Justice demand that the cries of His innocent children be answered[12]?
Human suffering is wrapped within the mystery of iniquity[13] and is tied directly into the first fall of mankind from God’s Grace[14]. Even the private sins in the spiritual life affect the entire state of mankind in relationship to human suffering. A sin does not have to be public to still be a sin and a direct offence to The Holy One. As a result of the free choices to sin, privately or publicly, by all a division from God’s Grace is formed whereby illnesses of all kinds are formed in the chasm of darkness. God does not create these illnesses nor does He create anything that is evil. It is humanities private and public sins[15] which in a cosmic and spiritual dimension create the environment in the recesses of darkness which a multitude of human suffering is created which effects the just and the unjust. To some degree or another we all have sinned terribly and offended Almighty God. Each sin which is freely committed has a causal relationship on the creation of all forms of suffering upon humankind. Like ripples that are created when throwing a stone in a clear lake the waves of indignation and iniquity beat upon all the vessels in the water. Just and unjust, righteous and wicked are all effected to varying degrees through illnesses and other forms of suffering as a result of the multitude of evils, private and public, committed by the entirety of humanity.
However, to entirely account for AIDS/ HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases and the suffering that results from them in simply a broad universal spiritual sense would be wrong. There are definite consequences for our actions in the spiritual and the temporal world. In most cases the suffering brought on through AIDS/ HIV is a direct result of the choices freely made to commit moral evil[16]. Our Loving and Merciful Eternal God has given us standards- commandments- for our behavior to protect us and draw us into Eternal Joy with Him. The rules of conduct for our behavior with Him and with others are not rules that enslave us but rather enable us to rejoice within the warmth of His Heart which burns with love for us. It is when we violate those standards, those commandments, that we fall victim to the consequences of our very poor choices and thereby suffer and cause others to suffer. Like a loving human father would want his children to have fun and play within the yard and not venture into the busy street so as to protect his children from the dangers he sees, I think so to with God’s commandments in relationship to His children. Yet, the deceiver entices the children of God into committing sins of all kinds, especially sexual sins, with the lie that all pleasure is good and there are no consequences for sin and/or it is not even a sin at all. Humans buy into the lies of Satan and reject the Divine Law and then suffer physical, emotional and spiritual consequences of their actions. Then when great sufferings ensue such as AIDS/ HIV and other illnesses mankind instead of owning up to the consequences of their actions and turning to God instead of blaming God for the evil of the illnesses.
It is so sad to me that intelligent Christians either excuse the behavior of the sinner so as not to offend or in some misguided form of charity towards the suffering individual rather than addressing both the physical needs of the suffering individual and their spiritual needs before their soul is lost forever at death (if they remain in unrepentant grave sin). It is also sad to me that Christians fall into the trap laid down by the father of all lies to cast blame for the suffering of AIDS/ HIV upon God by equating it to a Divine Punishment. One of the big problems I feel with exacting Divine Punishment upon anyone is that then we must too stand ready to face the Divine Punishment we are due for our own sins. I feel also to equate illnesses regardless of the behaviors which brought them about with Divine Punishment places the Christian in the very sinful position of being judge rather than allowing God to be the Eternal Judge[17]. Souls freely choose their own heaven or hell by the actions they make. We can choose to live as Children of the Light[18] and accept and follow The Crucified and Risen One bearing our crosses daily for Him or we can choose evil and the temporal and eternal hell that ensues. God desires that all men and women repent of any number of sins- including homosexual actions- and come to salvation in and through Jesus Christ.
I feel the evil one ensnares some with temptations to homosexual activity and they allow him to pull their soul into the pit by committing the vile sin. In relationship to the previous statement the evil one also, I feel, ensnares the faithful Christian by acts of hatred or by not being Christ like to the homosexual person. The evil one ensnares the Christian into either dealing with the homosexual with either ‘kid gloves’ by not being truthful about the danger they are placing their immortal soul and their temporal bodies in- through AIDS/ HIV or by dealing strictly with the sin while not caring for the sinner- body and soul. It is a very precarious balance between Love and Truth that the faithful Christian must walk. It is a balance that can only be found in the Holy Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ- for it is at the foot of the Cross that the Christian achieves the balance through the power of the Holy Spirit.
We must, I feel, as Christ’s faithful boldly and clearly proclaim the Truth[19] and not shy away from calling a sin a sin. The faithful Christian must also treat each person- regardless of their individual sinfulness with Christian Charity. The faithful Christian must make the distinction between the sinner (which to some degree or order we all are) and the sin itself. We must look on each sinner regardless of how repulsive the sin they commit as a potential repentant child of God. We must give comfort and aid to the person, in body and soul, as they are the least of his children[20]. The homosexual person will not come into repentance and conversion if they are not given the Truth with Love[21]. Like wise the person suffering from the ravages of HIV/ AIDS must be ministered to in body and soul by the entire Christian community just as Our Lord[22]. If Christians can learn to look upon all people as potential repentant saints of the Most High God and as Jesus Christ, in a distressing disguise[23], then I feel we can not only treat the suffering of the body but also the suffering soul within. We must therefore boldly proclaim the Divine Truth and call a sin a sin and that to the soul that repents God is infinitely merciful[24].
We each have our own crosses to bear in regards to the temptations we face[25]. I am so grateful to Almighty God that my temptations do not involve sins like these (i.e. homosexual sins). I feel that the cross I must bear in other temptations which through God’s Grace[26] and Mercy- He is able to help me to overcome is of sufficient enough weight. What I must do- what we all must do- is to help those that are weak in certain areas to come to know the Truth and Love of God through Jesus Christ[27]. I feel we must each do our part to bring each other, and ourselves, into conversion daily and through acts of Mercy bring souls to Christ Jesus. Our Lord was not spared His own temptations, though He never fell to them, in the desert and we too shall be facing our own temptations of some kind. We must keep our eyes focused upon Him and hold up as our banner for the world to see our motto- “Jesus I Trust in YOU”![28] When God deals out true Divine Punishment it will be done in a way that there can be no question by sinner or saint as to the reason or the correctness of form.
In conclusion, I do not feel that AIDS/ HIV are a form of Divine Punishment rather a self inflicted wound that all of humanity is responsible for, to varying degrees, and must bear. Humanity can only find eternal salvation in Jesus Christ[29]. Terrible sufferings of all kinds will come about as a result of the effects of sin and evil in the world. How much worse sufferings have the masses of humanity inflicted upon the Heart of God than we have received ourselves. Divine Mercy and Divine Justice demand[30] of each of us as Christians that we must proclaim the Truth of Christ to all especially to those who can benefit the most from the infinite Mercy of God[31]. We must bind the wounds of humanity and be the visible hands of Jesus Christ to those who suffer from all afflictions including AIDS/ HIV. We must be the voices of Mercy and Truth along with being the hands of Christ to all especially the sick (spiritually and temporally) of the world lest we bring forth a worst Divine Punishment upon ourselves. How we, as Christ’s faithful, deal with and treat those who are lost in the most darkness of error and sin alas determines not only their salvation but how we are judged by the Almighty and Holy One. Lest we forget the final lesson of Moses who made it to the threshold of the Promise Land[32] after leading the children of the Most High God[33] and prevented from entering because of his own unfaithfulness[34]. Let us therefore pray[35] to The Crucified and Risen One born Incarnate that we may have the grace of final perseverance[36] in proclaiming the Truth with Love[37] to all and bring all sinners[38]- heterosexuals and homosexuals back home into the promise land.

Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and Forever!
For the most part I kept to my Lenten promise to greatly limit or even eliminate television and internet that was not absolutely needed. I did fudge some but I did pretty well over all. Ya know what my friends I turned on the television today and I could not believe the defense. It is not that the shows are worse in 40 some odd days time but my sight is much clearer now.
We are inundated by so much filth we can not even see strait. This on regular networks that does not even touch the vile stuff that many of the cable networks pump out. No wonder lines to the confessionals are so short. People have completely lost any sense of what sin and evil is. We dare not write or say that certain acts are sinful and evil lest we upset the delicate flowers of the wicked. Oh yes I know it might be offensive to those morally and ethically challenged individuals who love to spread hate messages against God and the Holy Church yet can not stand to face the reality of their own lives of debauchery and evil.
Certain municipalities are guilty of interference as it seems with the Bill of Rights in the exercise of a little known thing called the Freedom of Religion. These groups with agendas promote the politically correctness which is only equitable to members of their 'chosen' clique of false morality. That is in the US in other countries politically correctness has resulted in the definite beginnings of religious persecution- why because the faint hearted are not willing to hear or be told someone else is hearing that actions have consequences.
But I am not finished yet. The rancid cult of me-ism further is developing throughout the media and all societies with it's devilish snares set to trap all who do not bow down to the god of self. This diabolical cult slides in with a cunning not seen before and promoted by the mindless chatter of countless self absorbed hours spent in front of the doctored up robots of personality. We are told that things such as morality, ethics, Eternal Truth, Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and Divine Law are things which hinder the progression of freedom by many. Yet, these same freedom minded individuals and groups would rather force feed their own agendas down the throats of humanity's children. We play down to the lowest basest common denominator and deny people the dignity that they are created to be. We play down the intelligence of people by force feeding them fluff and warm and fuzzy (and many times evil) notions that sin is not important.
People wake up! Rise up to your dignity that you were created to live in! Use the intelligence and the brilliant minds that you have and reject this poisonous pill you are being offered which is wrapped in the candy coating of politically correctness and mindless slobber which is invading the world. There is an absolute good. There is an absolute Truth. There is real love. There is such a thing as eternal joy and eternal damnation. There is one word to sum up all Truth and He has a name- a Holy and righteous Name Jesus.
The hour is getting very late. Mercy and Grace is pouring out of the wounded Heart of God. It is time to reject the cult of self and accept the Truth of who you are and who HE IS. Weeks are as minutes and days are as seconds. Time is quickly clicking away. The Master knocks at the door of your heart and waits. He calls you by name. Come. You must decide the world and it's traps which are falling into destruction or the God of Mercy, Truth and Love.
Come Forward Oh Lord God and wake this world up before more souls are lost. Come Forward you mighty ones of God and shake the sleepy children out of the haze of the evil one who is trying to ensnare the souls of humanity. Come Forward you people of the Most High God and speak out against the storm of destruction which is pulling so many souls into the pit of eternal ruin.
Purify this world and our hearts Oh Lord God of the filth which burdens your children's souls and destroys the destiny that they should have been seeking. Draw souls into Your Heart filled with infinite Love and Mercy. Send forth the heavenly fire of Your Mercy and Love upon this world so that souls may shine with Your Glory. Amen.

Elevation, the Cross and Faith

I was thinking about the reading from a few days ago "so as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert so must the Son of Man be lifted up" (cf. St. John 3:12-21). Our Lord was obviously speaking of the His Cross in this. We read further that He says He will draw all people unto Himself (cf. St. John 12:31-36). Countless generations have found salvation through Christ Jesus Crucified- the Son of Man lifted up. With that said I thought about the Mass and how the priest after the consecration elevates the Holy Eucharist- Our Lord Jesus Christ. Again Our Lord is lifted up and at our worthy communion He draws us into Himself and He takes up His abode within us and we within Him. The Creator of the Universe takes on the appearance of bread and wine so that our corruptible bodies may be united with the incorruptible, with the Holy Mighty One and to bring us salvation and eternal life.
I must confess that it was a struggle for me and sometimes is to understand and really believe that the Holy God who created us all and redeemed us with His own blood would come under the appearance of bread and wine. "Lord I believe, help my unbelief" (cf St. Mark 9:23-24). I think what we need is to pray for an increase of faith- for it is through the eyes of faith that the scales of perdition and worldliness are pealed back and we see. Regardless of who we are or how far on our journeys we have traveled, regardless of our levels of education or even catachisis we must all pray daily for an increase of faith.There is no such thing as too much or even enough faith. There is no such thing as too much love or hope. We all need an increase of faith, hope and love regardless of our state in life or vocation. Faith, Hope and Love are gifts from God and we must pray for an increase in all three daily. I think God likes those prayers for an increase of faith hope and love. It is through increased faith, hope and love that we know just how much He loves us and how we can best love Him, serve Him and love others that He created. He will supply us with full measure and running over if we ask (cf. St Luke 6:38; 1 Cor2:9) .
We are coming up quickly on the Holiest days of the Christian year. Look upon Christ Jesus on the crucifix lifted up and then watch what the priest does in the Mass. Pray for an increase of faith, hope and love to see, to love and to serve the Word Made Flesh who will draw you into Himself and He within you. Look to the Cross that is where our hope is. Look to Jesus and remain in His Love (cf. St. John15).

Finally please pray for many conversions this week and before Divine Mercy Sunday- especially those lost in darkness the most and for those in dissent from the Holy Church. Let us bring them home through our prayers.

The mountains quake to the depth of the sea

When I was praying Vespers tonight one of the psalms used was Psalm 46 which carries in my Bible the title God, the Protector of Zion. Right off the bat in verse 3 the Psalmist tells us 'we do not fear, even though earth be shaken and the mountains quake to the depth of the sea'. I was reminded of the words of both the Prophet Isaiah and St John the Baptist. "Make strait in the desert a wasteland for our God! Every valley shall be filled in and every mountain and hill shall be made low, the rugged land shall be make a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed..." (cf. Isaiah 40:4-5)
Now on first examine I always thought of physical trials or even emotional ones which God protects us from as the subtitle of the psalm refers to. When I think though about the work that the Holy Spirit does within the soul--especially mine most recently. I think about how the ruff portions of the soul must be removed so that the glory of the Lord can be manifested more fully. We are reminded that to create us anew we will be purified in the Divine Furnace like a fine precious metal which burns away the impurity so that it may reflect the glory of the Master's Image. I have not done much construction in my life but I know that it is far easier to build a great building that will stand on ground that has been prepared and leveled over ruff ground. The Psalmist tonight reminded me that to better conform my own soul and mind into a place which the glory of the Lord will be better revealed there has to be some inner earth shaking and a few mountains have to fall. He is with us be it in interior purification which we all need to better show His Light to to the world. He is also with us all in the exterior purifications of life and the world. He is with us and sustains us with an everlasting love.
I have been praying quite a bit lately asking God to increase my love, increase my hope, increase my faith. I remember hearing about St Francis asking God to grant him the grace of loving with the same 'excessive love' He has for all of us. To love God and neighbor with that great love requires that hearts and souls are cleared free of junk which we all build up over a lifetime- in otherwords the mountains within must shake a bit and the rough country must be made a broad valley. It is not easy--no one said it was. Thanks be to God He does it with surgical precision and with a love which encompasses all and consoles the soul.
So again back to Isaiah in chapter 35 we hear those words of comfort to the soul "Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, Fear not, Here is your God, He comes with vindication..." Going through a period of purification (within or in the world) is tuff yet we have no reason to fear for He who dwells within shall give comfort and vindication to the soul that trusts in Him. He creates us anew and we shall radiate His glory in a way we never thought possible. Then like the Psalmist in Psalm 46 we can say joyfully "Come and see the works of the Lord......The Lord of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob" (v. 9,12).

Beware of dangerous prayers..........

The prayer that I wrote a few weeks ago and posted on this blog "Conform my soul O Lord" should come with a warning label I think. Warning do not pray this prayer unless you are prepared for Our Merciful God to really begin to conform you. I am glad I did- says the man who is in the midst of purification- though it should not be taken lightly. No body I think enjoys purification -active or passive. It is vital to progress in the spiritual life but it aint fun my friends. We strive for The One who is Holy and therefore we must caste off- or have it casted off- the shell that we hold on to of self. It is hard work and it is not fun at times- worth it yes.
Don't let these pycho babble new age neophytes or liberal feel good milquetoasters tell you that the walk with Christ is a walk in the garden. Well maybe in a way it is but it is the garden that Our Lord sweated and wept blood in agony. There can be no Easter Sunday with out Good Friday. We must enter into the passion ourselves to some measure to come through it created anew in Him and for Him. He has brought me this far and I am not going to leave now just because it is a bit painful.
I think at times holiness is a process and sometimes we get caught up in the process and fail to remember the destination. So as the old Irish priest says we begin at the beginning. Each day we (I) begin anew the struggle and I thank God each day that this day He brings me through with a greater love for Him. Real authentic Catholic faith is for real men and women not for the fluff doctors of hypocrisy. Be a real man. Be a real woman. Embrace your cross and follow on this journey towards Christ Jesus. Just watch for prayers that may have warning labels attached as they may work.

The cat and the bag

I was doing homework about 30 minutes ago and heard a big crash. What ensued was 15 minutes of first trying to discern what this unholy noise was and then chasing down the cat who had become entangled in a plastic grocery sack. The cat had the handle of the sack tangled around his body and ran in a most bizarre fashion from room to room scared out of his mind as the evil plastic bag followed him everywhere. I have never heard such a racket as this poor cat who was frightened ran into doors, walls and everything else in his vain attempt to escape the bag from hell that was tormenting him. I wanted to laugh and I wanted to shout as I tried to catch him and save him from his own demise. Eventually he ran under a bed and hid. "There now that evil thing that has grabbed on to me is gone and I am safe"- I am sure he thought in his cat brain. This gave me a chance to pull him with some effort from under the bed and take the contraption off of him and calm his frayed nerves. Now life is wonderful for him again and I have gained a wee bit of wisdom- besides the obvious of not leaving a plastic bag within 10 feet of a cat.
I come up on times in my own life when little things attach themselves to me. Ideas, imperfections, sin and even situations that cause great trouble and send me running into the walls and doorposts. It is through prayer and most of that in silence before Our Lord Jesus Christ that He unravels the problems and frees me so that I can calm down and get to the business of life with Him again. In the case of sin He does this through the Sacrament of reconciliation and later through Holy Eucharist. Another way of freeing ones self from the entanglements we ensnare ourselves in is through good old fashioned mortification and penance. We have to (I have to) break the bonds that have ensnared us. What a wonderful gift we have been given in Lent to do this. We don't have to run about scared of the monster that is on us but we can free ourselves through God's Mercy and Grace and live in His Love and Peace regardless of what the world is doing. It is that interior peace that we need desperately if we hope to withstand the trials and darkness of the world around us. It is peace that can only come by rending our hearts and putting on Christ Jesus. This world is full of traps and monsters that can attach them self to us and only in Christ can we ever find freedom. It is only through prayer and the sacraments that we break free like my cat and can rest within His Heart.
Just like I had to remove the temptation for the cat to become entagled again we have to avoid at all costs the near occasion to what ever sin tends to grab ahold of us. It is amazing what a animal can teach a person but not as amazing as what God can do with the soul that trusts in Him. We (I) press forward on this Great Lent rending hearts and praying as we await the glorious Easter which comes. No one that I know of, including myself, enjoys mortification and penance and rending our hearts -it is tuff work- however we must do these things in order to rid our selves of that unwanted bag-gage that causes us to run about harming our souls. Like that cat who ran under the bed we need to go into the confessionals and those quiet rooms alone in prayer so that God can help us remove the junk and live freely in His Love.

Random musings on a Friday in Lent......

Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things but it is my hope that soon I can start up the new blog and close out this one. Finding a nice looking template that I can adapt that will give proper glory to God is important. Taking the time to do it is a challenge also. One of these days I will find something and adapt it properly. Until that day you have to suffer through this thing a bit longer.
I ask you to please today and this weekend to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Pray at home or at work or go to a local Church. What matters is that you do it not set it off. Soon we will all wish that we prayed more one way or the other. I just feel that in the depth of my heart- I don't understand it and it does not come from various seers but rather a intense feeling. God is so loving and merciful and regardless of what you have done He is waiting for you. I can promise you as one who knows from experiance you will never regret any time you spend in prayer to Our Lord Jesus Christ. I do ask you though when you offer your Chaplet to remember me and my intentions in your prayers.
Big Holy Day tomorrow in honor of our Blessed Mother's Fiat. I heard a guy on the radio today saying that it was the Fiat that changed the course of humanity. Just think of the good that we could all do if each of us responded to what God asks us with a similar YES.

Great is Thy Faithfulness.....

It seems to me that the older I get and the further I progress along in the interior life with Our Lord Jesus Christ there are many things I understand and many more I do not understand. What I will focus on right now is one of those things I do not understand. I know we should be loving to our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus who have little faith or who for what ever reason have lost faith. I guess I just don't understand how intelligent people who have been well educated in the Truths that we hold so dear can be so lukewarm and even spiritually sick. I have been so blessed recently and throughout my life to know men and women of great faith. I attend Mass with some of the most faith filled men and women I have ever met. Souls that shine. I have also seen at times in the outside world men and women who have unfortunately received their degrees before they received their education. I see folks who seem to be more intent of mediocre lives filled with agendas rather than with Christ or love of neighbor and it puzzles me. Both groups of people are equally intelligent yet one group lives for Christ and embraces His Truth and the other would rather work towards unreal agendas which are based in disobedience and pride.
I have been so fortunate to witness lately the lives of men and women who are filled with a great love of Christ's Church and who embrace their crosses and their vocations with a zeal that gives me great courage and hope. Conversely I have witnessed people who just do not get it -either that or reject His Truth. It frustrates me at times- many times. I see the world heading for a collision and I so desperately want to help in my very feeble way to bring souls before the Throne of Grace and Mercy though I do not know how best to bear witness.
I know that Our Merciful God loves each person who ever they are with a everlasting love. I know that even those who frustrate me are loved by The One who is Truth, Love and Mercy. I know that even those who live horrible lives of sin and evil are called to His Mercy and Truth. Yet how does one very feeble and poorly educated Catholic Christian proclaim with any authority the Love and Mercy of God. My only voice I think that can reach out to many is this poor excuse of a blog. I can only pray that tomorrow I can be a better witness in my personal life and in my public life. Any good in my life or any souls that have been lead to Him through me is due to God and the things that are not so good is all me. I don't think that is false humility but rather reality.
What I ask of you this weekend is to lift up in prayer the souls of those who are lukewarm and those who are in the most darkness that they may find conversion. God knows who needs our prayers the most and will help them--what we have to do is be faithful and pray for them. St. Monica never gave up on Augustine and look how God answered her prayers with his conversion. We too do not need to complain but pray and pray some more. I have to remember that I am not called to be successful but faithful. Let God take care of the other let us just be faithful and pray with out ceasing.

Love and Justice and other topics.....

Below is a position paper I had to write for my ethics final a few weeks ago. We had to write on the relationship between Love and Justice and then discuss five seperate issues in corporate ethics picked by the instructor and discuss problems and ethics in each. There was one other paper which I may or may not publish on this forum as it may be a bit controversial in nature- I think my theology in it is good but the subject matter I was required to write on is at issue.
I am on to another course and that is what I will be working on this weekend. Please say a few extra prayers for me. All the hard work is worth it if I can please Our Divine Master and bring someday souls into His Heart which burns with love for us all.

Part I:

"Christian Ethics and the relationship between Love and Justice"

"Justice is Love serving God Alone[1]".

The crisis of culture, any culture, is finding the perfect balance between Love and Justice (Truth). It is my belief that these two poles find perfect harmony only in the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It is in the Holy Cross that the Christian must look to find solutions to achieving balance between Love[2] and Truth which can be carried into applications involving ethical dilemmas in the workplace, in homes, in societies, in governments, between divergent peoples and with each other. God is Love[3]. God is Truth[4]. God is Just and Merciful[5]. To find the proper position for the ethical application for the Christian I believe we must first look at the nature of God[6], within my very limited intellect and understanding then we can find the solution to any ethical dilemma facing us.

God is Truth and God is Love[7] and the most perfect witness to humankind of that unity of perfect Love and perfect Truth is in the Holy Cross[i] of Our Lord Jesus Christ.[8] Just as one can not separate[ii] the humanity of Our Lord from His Divinity[9] one can not separate Divine Truth from Divine Love. Flowing from God's Truth and Love united perfectly and eternally is Divine Mercy and Divine Justice[10]. So too, Divine Justice without Divine Mercy would not exist with the perfect and eternal Divine Love and Divine Truth. In fact Justice and Mercy are so closely woven together that one can not take away from one without adding to the other and visa versa. For True Justice can not exist with out Mercy and true Mercy can not exist without Justice. Divine Mercy can not exist without Divine Justice for to be Merciful one must have a Judge who is Merciful and thereby Justice. Flowing forth from His Divine Mercy[11] comes salvation and expiation for the sins and offences to Divine Justice ergo offences against Divine Love and Divine Truth. Divine Mercy is a person- the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity[12] Our Lord Jesus Christ. Yet, Mercy without Justice for those to who reject God's Mercy[13] is not merciful or Just to those whom He has forgiven. In other words, there must be a Judgment dealt out with equity and Truth for all of humankind the wicked and the righteous in order for True Justice to be rendered. Man on his own account can never satisfy Divine Justice on his own it is only through the Sacred Blood of the spotless Lamb of God that satisfaction for the sins and offences can wash our robes and create us anew. For those though that reject Divine Mercy[14] alas they can only face the eternal Divine Judgment alone with no way to atone for their sins. God's Love demands Justice and God’s Truth demands Mercy. We must look to the Holy Cross[iii] lest we forget the demands of Love and Truth and our responsibility to carry both out in all ethical and daily life decisions.

What happens in societies, workplaces and individuals when Truth is not administered with Love is that people become legalistic and strictly dogmatic and fail to recognize the Sacred Dignity of the individual. Also opportunities to treat others mercifully as God has treated us all so very mercifully are not met. We furthermore miss opportunities to evangelize the world around us by being so dogmatic in our approach that a potential opportunity for conversion in another is missed. We then risk placing ourselves in the precarious position of being the judge and being judged by those same exacting rules. We must act mercifully and lovingly to our neighbors in the workplace, in families and in society while not compromising the Truth of our faith in Jesus Christ. Alas the only true balance between Truth and Love can be found upon the Holy Cross and in God Himself.

Conversely though when Love is administered without Truth then individuals, corporations, institutions, societies and even Churches face situations in which the "dictatorship of relativism"[15] takes hold. No position is can be completely held as Truth for to do so would compromise the pseudo false love of neighbor which does not want to dare offend out of a notion that –that is somehow more loving[16]. So individuals and groups are allowed to do most anything the individual decide is right rather than speaking the Truth with Love and establishing laws and rules to be formed around those Divine Truths. Love does not mean not correcting a pattern of behavior or even an individual action or person that is living in error or evil. In fact true love demands[17] bold and sometimes painful honesty regarding the evils of the day especially in Christian Ethics. Churches are guilty too many times of swaying in the breeze of the winds of public opinion in order to boost membership, not loose contributions or donations or not face persecution. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever and as The Word born Incarnate[18] neither do any of the Divine Laws that He gives us in the Sacred Scripture. We need not wonder about whether we are Christians will face opposition from the world because of Our Lord and the Law of God we know from Christ Jesus Himself that we will. I remember reading the words of John Henry Newman saying that if the Church is not persecuted She is not proclaiming Christ Jesus[19]. No one likes to face persecution of any sort. We all want to be liked by everyone the Christian though must proclaim Our Lord Jesus Christ whether convenient or inconvenient. I ran across a quotation recently which I think is appropriate.

"We live in an age which places a very strong emphasis on tolerance, mutuality, and acceptance. I have heard repeatedly over the years that "Jesus never judged, condemned or excluded anyone." I wonder if Peter would agree as the words of Jesus, "Get behind me you Satan," rang in his ears. I wonder if the Scribes and the Pharisees would agree as they rankled at being called whitened sepulchers or broods of vipers. I wonder if those who heard Jesus say, "Whoever leads one of these little ones astray, it would be better if he had a millstone tied around his neck and be cast into the sea," nodded approval and said, "He is so tolerant and accepting." This verse is included, virtually verbatim, in each of the three Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke. I certainly have no qualms about the image of Jesus as kind and gentle, or with Jesus’ own description of Himself as "meek and humble of heart." I see and appreciate the great appeal of one of the most recent devotions fostered so powerfully by our late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, that of Divine Mercy. Each of these attractive and reassuring aspects of Jesus needs to be remembered. These are aspects of Jesus that we cannot afford to forget and to which we can and must cling. At the same time we do well not to forget that the Lord is also a "God of power and might." Jesus stood up to the guards who came to arrest him in the Garden of Gethsemane. He stood courageously before Pilate. He bore His cross with noble, unflinching determination. He is not a God of weakness. He is strong and He defends His people. This accounts for the strong language used when the “little ones” of His flock are put at risk.

In our "compromising age" we are loath to name something too strongly. If we do, we are accused of harshness, judgmentalism, perhaps arrogance, certainly intolerance and possibly pharisaism. While it is always necessary to speak the truth with love, the Church also believes and teaches that it is also necessary to speak the truth with strength. It is necessary to defend truth and not be too quick to rationalize, justify or excuse misleading teachings or teachers. There is a point at which passive "tolerance" allows misleading teachings to be spread and propagated, thus confusing or even misleading the faithful about the truths of the Church. There is a very strong word, which still exists in our Church, which most of us are too "gentle" to use. The word is "heresy." We perhaps think that heresy is a thing of the past. We think perhaps of the Arian heresy or the Pelagian heresy or the Manichaen heresy. We might even maintain that there are no longer any heretics because that conjures up images of inquisitions and burnings at the stake. I do not, in any way, seek to validate or justify any kind of "vigilante" theology, but we do need strong words to combat erroneous and fallacious teaching."[20] + Most Rev. We must deal with others and with ethical dilemmas in the light of Who God Is and the demands He can justly require us. We can not look properly at any decsion involving ethics with out doing so with one eye firmly upon the Holy Cross then in light of The Eternal Truth and Eternal Love[21] we can make any proper ethical decsion needed. God’s has established the framework in His Commandments and we must deliver that Truth upon the carriage of Love. Love has a price and that price is in the Truth of the Cross. If we hold fast to who God is and what He demands of us then all of our interactions especially in ethical decisions will be made much easier. I began this essay with a quote from St Augustine on Justice and Love and I will end this with another Doctor of the Catholic Church -St. Therese of Lisieux on love and which covers the responsibility to Divine Truth by the soul. For we only have to be faithful to His Truth and remain in His Love.

“On the evening of Love, speaking without parable,

Jesus said: “If anyone wishes to love me

All his life, let him keep my Word.

My Father and I will come to visit him.

And we will make his heart our dwelling.

Coming to him, we shall love him always.

We want him to remain, filled with peace,

In our Love….”[22]

Part II:

Christian Ethics in advertising

Applying Christian Ethics as I have stated in the previous part of this paper to advertising requires that we treat all concerned with both Love and Truth[23]. The application of Christian Ethos to advertising must applied to the companies who are advertising their products, the employees of various companies and advertising agencies, to the consumer, and to society in general to name a few. I will attempt to apply the Christian Ethos to the various groups as I have listed here as succinctly as possible.

Companies which wish to advertise their products or services must deal with employees and consumers in an ethical manner. Companies should insure to all means possible that employees and contractors are treated with dignity and respect to pay a just wage for work. This should be done not only because "it is the right way to do things" but also because it makes good business sense. In their relationship to consumers companies need to treat each client with dignity and of a person of value regardless of the size of the purchase or the contract. This creates some of the best free advertisement possible word of mouth and recommendations. If a product or service is defective then it needs to be replaced or compensated for so as to treat the consumer with respect. Consumers should further be treated with respect by receiving quality products and services for a fair market value. Consumers also have the right to expect that their product or service was not brought to them through unethical practices such as child labor or anything of the sort. Consumers also have the right to be able to shop around for products and services in a fair and ethical market place so; monopolies should never be allowed as they tend to treat consumers unethically.
Advertising agencies should never play down to the lowest common denominator in sales tactics which all too frequently in lust. To treat the potential consumer with dignity requires that advertising strategies do not violate morality and decency. There are ways with modern technology to give presentations which do not violate the dignity of all people who will be listening to or viewing an advertisement which do not result in lude behavior or immoral messages being given[24]. Lest we lead a little one astray we should conduct advertising campaigns which do not violate basic moral ethics. Advertisements which violate decency should never be considered. Advertising agencies can be truthful in advertising about the product that they are promoting. Advertising agencies can be just by not promoting products which violate basic moral behavior. Advertising agencies can be loving by remembering that consumers and children will view their advertisements so immoral conduct is not allowed for the sake of those children. Advertising agencies can treat all consumers and potential consumers with love and truth by not promoting products which are at best substandard or harmful to the health of consumers. Sometimes to insure the most ethical standards are followed products or services may need to be rejected for the sake of the people who will use them. Agencies must realize that the financial ends or compensation do not justify the means by presentation if those means are by way of promotion of immorality or evil.
Responsibility to and of consumers and society. Christian consumers make up the largest demographic of all potential consumers in the United States yet frequently their basic moral ethos is violated by companies and advertisers. Companies doing business and agencies responsible for advertisements have a responsibility to their largest customer to treat them in business relations and detriments with respect and dignity whether the company is Christian or not. Far too often though little respect is paid to the rights of the Christian in the production of offensive ads or in the promotion of products which violate Divine Law[25]. Christians in the interest of being loving fail to speak out against immorality in advertising or for just a lack of concern. Christians should speak out through letter writing campaigns and most of all with their hard earned dollars to not purchase products or services from companies which violate Divine Law. Being a Christian in any age is difficult and especially in a time when God's Law is constantly being questioned and a bombardment of the senses violate the dignity of all peoples and especially that of children. Christian parents and singles must speak for the voiceless children who are being molested by images and concepts of debauchery. I further ponder that it is the problem of Luke warmness[26] within the soul of individual Christians who do not raise to some extent their prophetic voices against the tide of evil that pervades many media and by default advertisements. I also wonder if not the Christian avoid the conflict of an issue such as this to avoid persecution and there by denying Christ Jesus by sins of omission. If we believe firmly in the Divine Truths[27] then why do we not live that out by word and deed for our sake and the sake of others?Christians in large part bear much of the responsibility for a constant degradation of the advertising media for they had and have the responsibility to speak out with voices and consumer dollars. If we as the Children of the God [28]of Love and Truth do not even say something in opposition to be the voice of moral ethics and the Voice of God to the world then who will- certainly not the world or it’s prince.

In my view responsible Christian ethics in advertisement begins at home with the Christian who must speak out against the tide of evil. Then as each soul raises his or her voice with Love and Truth and through consumer spending proper Christian ethics will follow in the advertising world.

Part III

Product Safety and Moral Ethics

Businesses should exercise prudence[29] and diligence to insure that products do not in anyway cause harm to consumers. This should be done to show respect and love to our neighbor who will be purchasing the product. If a product is not tested properly and prudence exercised and harm comes to the consumer then those who have the responsibility of releasing said product are at the very least culpable for the sin of not loving our neighbor. This does not even calculate the tragedy of when death occurs due to lack of product safety which I feel results in the culpability[30] to not killing another. It is impossible to calculate all potential hazards with a given product not to mention misuses. However, if to the best knowledge of the product maker’s potential known hazards are avoided and adequate labeling is given in prudence and in truth and unforeseen injury results then it behooves the business to remove and fix the problem before any potential reissuance of the product to the consumer world. Extremes in insuring product safety can be seen to both ends of the spectrum. Products are held in production and research while costly and non prudential tests are conducted which drives up the cost to the consumer and there by making consumers suffer under greater financial hardship- which is not charitable. Conversely products are rushed through production with little or no standards applied to insure the reasonable safety and use of the product- this also shows little love for the consumer.

It is my understanding of sin[31] that for a mortal sin to take place three conditions[32] must be met. They are 1. Serious matter in other words does it violate Divine Law.

2. Knowledge or firm belief that the act is wrong- i.e. a sin.

3. Full consent of the will.

In application to product safety if we apply these three tenants to unsafe products an example could be given to assign culpability of the injury or death upon the company or its employees. A company releases a new toy which causes the harm to children by its use. Investigation shows that this toy showed flaws while in production and no or very poor product testing was carried out by the company. Further investigation shows that some employees saw or were aware of the hidden dangers but either did not speak out or were silenced. Despite warnings of hazards by product research persons or other employees even a few warnings the product is released and injury and/ or death result by its use or obvious known misuse. Then I feel both the company and each employee who was aware of this hazard have violated Christian ethics and even Divine Law[33] in how we are to relate to others. Furthermore, the individuals who had said knowledge and released an unsafe product are more than likely guilty of serious (grave) sin[34] if the conditions set above have been met. Alas, institutions and companies will not stand judgment before God but the people within those institututions and companies will for their actions or lack of actions that harm others that they could have avoided.

I think that while we should always do all we can to avoid sin[35] we should not focus or efforts or ethos on the avoidance of sin but on the commandment to love. We should not want to allow an unsafe product to be released not only because of the love we would want to exhibit to our neighbor and to God. We set down rules and laws for product safety and the testing of products to be obedient[36] to Truth. We carry out those laws and rules for product safety for Love- love of neighbor and love of God who created us all. I think if we, acting with prudence and reason, release products which are safe then we show respect to God and respect to His creatures- which we all are. If we have to (and we do) establish rules and laws to insure product safety out of the negative implementations of what violation of those standards carry and it keeps consumers safe to the best of our ability then good. If we carry out standards for product safety with due prudence for the love of neighbor and of God then it is all the more better. No product can be completely safe 100% of the time but with using the intelligence that Our Loving God has given us we do what is best to insure safety; then we have found some of that balance between Love and Truth which is fully evident in the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ[iv].

Part IV:

Gender discrimination and Christian Ethics.

There are positions which men can not fill such as the role of motherhood and there are positions especially in the military or in the Church that women can not fill and I will not be addressing these or similar positions which are gender specific roles. I will however address issues concerning gender equality within the standard corporate environment for the purpose of this position paper.

Companies have the responsibility, especially Christian companies, to insure that gender differences are not hindrances to a person obtaining a position or for advancement with in an organization. Sacred Scripture tells us that God created man and male and female He created them. The sacred dignity of each individual must be tantamount to creating workplaces which are diverse to gender and give dignity to the individual person. The individual should be hired or promoted not based on gender politics but upon the qualifications of the individual. Companies, in relation to gender differences, should celebrate and promote diversity while not excluding the dignity of the individual. Companies should make reasonable accommodation for gender differences that do not in anyway lessen the dignity of any worker due to his or her gender.

Gender discrimination further carries itself out through environments which promote lude behavior[37] by individuals and lessens the dignity or a gender minority at a workplace. Crude behavior can make a woman or a man feel discriminated against despite company policy for gender equality. Furthermore, gender specific behavior which might not be inappropriate for a single gender environment even if it is not per se sinful can when a different gender enters the work place feel discriminated against. Two examples of each are given below:

A. An office has only men working in it and the men when on break discuss health problems that are specific to male sexuality[38] in a non sinful didactic manner to help another worker who is dealing with similar health issues. In this male only environment when the matter does not lead to sinful discussion and is appropriate during break times this is fine and in fact shows that Love with Truth concept earlier discussed. However, when a female employee is brought into the mix then this same discussion should be avoided so as to not show disrespect for the dignity of the female worker. These discussions can be carried out in a non work environment later. Simply changing the topic when ever the female employee comes in the presence might risk making the female uncomfortable to the point that she feels discriminated against. So, once again, prudence which the Holy Spirit gives us needs to be exercised by all.

B. If an office has only women working in it and the women there discuss female specific health problems or assist each other with female personal hygiene issues. This again is not sinful in its own right. When a male employee enters the company though this behavior must be stopped for the reasons outlined above in the male dominated situation. Also such behavior while normal and not necessarily sinful in a group of women could lead the man to sin and therefore must be avoided.

Both of the examples outlined above are mere tips of the iceberg of potential problems that could arise with gender discrimination and there are much more obvious problems that occur but can not be treated adequately in the length of the position paper asked for.

I believe that in the workplace all efforts must be made to insure that the sacred dignity of both male and female persons are upheld lest we sin against God and further create gender bias. God created us equal in creation and in most work environments we must show that equality while upholding the differences ordained by God. The quality of the work and the integrity of the individual worker must be held up for the worker to emulate and not give bias to the gender of the worker. Gender bias occurs within business both ways many times though is more prominent and more known against women these days. Gender discrimination in the workplace and in society, with in the parameters set forth, is a grave sin against God who is Love[39] and Truth.

Gender differences must be embraced but not given bias to a particular gender. In most work places an attitude of respect and neutrality to gender- within limits- must be held up. Respect and gender neutrality in the workplace does not mean not recognizing differences but treating each individual with respect and basing hiring or promotion upon merit and not on gender. Women should be treated with great dignity and respect as daughters of the Most High God[40] while not holding their gender differences as an obstacle for true workplace equality. Women should also act as intelligent and righteous daughters of God and not lesser than or greater than their male counterparts. I was always taught by my father that a man treats a woman like a lady unless she proves herself otherwise. I would take that a step further and say that in the workplace even if a woman does not live up to the dignity[41] she was created to be she should be treated as a lady if for no other reason as it bears witness to what Our Lord would want. Along the same line women should especially in the workplace exhibit character as beloved daughters of God[42] even if in their personal life they do not act as such- to receive respect one must command respect by being deserving of respect in action, word and demeanor. Men too must be treated with respect as sons of God and should be shown respect not for their maleness but as coequals in the workplace. Men must learn to embrace their maleness while not shying away from more sensitive characteristics frequently but erroneously applied to females. Men must be treated as and carry them selves with dignity[43] as righteous intelligent sons of God in the workplace and in personal life. Each person male and female has God given dignity as individuals and each individual in the workplace must work together as coequals.[44]

In the work environment gender bias must be eliminated for it is a violation of the Divine Law. Abuses in workplace gender relations must be eradicated through constant evaluation, peer review, workplace counseling, policy changes and when necessary disciplinary action from the top to the bottom of the organization. Gender bias must be dealt with in the workplace and in society always through the lens of Divine Love and Divine Truth for any proper effective change to take place. We all both male and female alas are coequal heirs to the Salvific Love of God[45] through Our Lord Jesus Christ and

when viewed as such I feel most gender discrimination will begin to cease.

Part V.

Privacy Issues and Christian Ethics

We are increasingly becoming a society of little or no personal privacy for a wide gamut of reasons. In some aspects of privacy issues society should exercise its responsibility to insure the safety and protection of her citizens. This protection covers but is not limited to the safety from harm and especially for the safety for children and vulnerable adults. This protection covers also safety from harm in the form of terrorism and criminal and foreign threats. A very delicate balance must be achieved so that over zealousness in protection does not interfere with the privacy of individuals who are afforded due process and are innocent of evil actions. Society and the individual Christian within her must carefully weigh laws and ordinances which may give far too much freedom to snoop there by violating the basic dignity of the individual.

Privacy issues in the workplace, as in society, are precarious to discern. Employers have a right to a just days work in exchange for a just day's labor. Employers have a right to insure that employees are not using or abusing communications technology for unauthorized use much less illegal or immoral use. Employers have the right especially in dealing with customer service issues to insure employees are acting properly and ethically to customers and to each other. Employers have the right to insure that employees are not treating their fellow employees with disrespect, hatred or in a manner which diminishes the dignity of the individual. Employers have the right to insure that equipment, technology or products are not illegally or immorally handled.

However, employees have the right to a basic guarantee of privacy in their private matters presuming that they are on personal or approved company time and are not illegal or immoral. Employees and individuals in society have the right to not divulge private information which has no relevance to others as long as they are not illegal or immoral.

In areas such as watching consumer purchasing to market products better companies do not have the right to collect data which in anyway places a particular product or service with a particular consumer unless those products or service violate Divine Law- in which case they should not be sold. Great care in the areas of data collection for items that contain warranties must be taken to insure that private information regarding the consumer is never shared with others and is only used for the intent that the individual has granted it. I see an infringement of my view of Christian ethics in privacy issues every time I get my haircut and am asked for my telephone number and address for a cash transaction- this is a violation of my right to privacy I feel. It is minor violations such as this that society gradually lessens the dignity of the individual by turning a individual human being into a group of statistics and buying trends that have less to do about marketing and more to do about abuse of freedom.

Little violations in privacy are becoming so wide spread that most people do not realize the impact. So, now companies and even governments are starting to use implanted computer chips on a limited basic under the guise of protection, consumer convenience, product usage data, inventory control, credit identity and even for purchases. It is not Buck Rogers' science fiction or the deluded dreams of paranoid individuals or even Christian eschatological studies[46] anymore it is reality. Numerous companies are now using computer radio frequency computer chips[47] placed in products to track usage for marketing and inventory control. The United States Army now uses the chips for inventory control in most items of a certain size or value. One company which works with home security is now using on a volunteer basis implanted radio frequency chips which are placed under the skin of their security workers.[48] Within the past several months a group of nightclubs in Europe started offering these chips to be implanted under the skin of patrons as a way that they might keep purchases and identity in check so that wallets and purses could be left home. Companies are also promoting the use of these chips in hospital nurseries to prevent kidnapping of newborns. These same chip manufactures have promoted to hospitals and nursing homes the use of the implantable chips[49] in vulnerable adults who can not easily identify their self. The implication of the complete loss of individual freedom and privacy in a societal sense is bad enough[50]. The much more sinister application[51] as it applies the Christian Eschatology is frightening to this writer and should be shouted from the rooftops of the faithful Christian, be they laity or ordained. The very slippery slope of what is private and to whom it is private must be combated against by every Christian. This writer feels based on Biblical Truth[52], countless hours in prayer and solid research of reliable secular news sources that we as a society are coming dangerously close to the fulfillment of a time[53] when all people will be required to take these silicon marks right beneath the skin.[54] This writer feels that currently we as a society will be facing a time when we might be forced to take these devices in order to prevent terrorist attack or track illegal aliens within our borders. This is not based on speculation or even Biblical Truth but on the secular 'non-biased' media outlets. Alas, only God knows the day and the time of the final confrontation. However, a clear indication of the season of iniquity is upon us. Alerting our fellow man to these obvious dangers in surrendering privacy could purchase some time for future generations. Lack of diligence[55] and of the spoken and written word in the public sector, in personal relations, in speaking to government leaders and upon the pulpits of the world will only result in a faster erosion of privacy and the eventual serious eschatological event[56] spoken of by St John.

Moving past this more serious issue the general issue of privacy in today's culture must be handled by the Christian with prudence and always through the lens of Divine Love and Divine Truth. There are definite times within the corporate world and society in general that modicum of privacy must be surrendered for the sake of others or even the individual. Each case must be looked at with discernment in the Light of Christ Jesus[57] as with any ethical dilemma. There are times when the Christian must stand firm in his or her stance to move no further in the issue of privacy or any other ethical issue. Each case must be handled both as a single item issue and as a part of the whole. It is only in the clarity of the Christian Truths and with our God given intelligence that such decisions can be reached. If we submit first and foremost to Christ Jesus[58] who is The Eternal Truth[59] and is Eternal Love Incarnate then quickly decsions are able to be made properly.

Part VI.

Insurance and Christian Ethics

For the purpose of this position paper and it's brevity I will address primarily the issue of applying Christian Ethics to health insurance. I am not an economist nor do I pretend to be such[60]. However, it seems to me that one of the driving forces in the enormous cost of health care today is because of insurance companies. I have heard arguments for and against a universal healthcare plan which would either completely do away with the need for health insurance companies or radically restructure them as we know them. Seeing children and the elderly who, through no fault of their own, can not afford reasonable quality health care in the day and age that we live in should bring shame to each American taxpayer and government official. There should be no reason what so ever with the great economic blessings that this country has that every man, woman and child should not have reasonable quality healthcare as a basic right. There should be no reason that while insurance company executives and shareholders become wealthier the average American family struggles to pay insurance premiums for it's self. As insurance companies make more money they support politicians who allow many times unethical practices and laws to be perpetuated and thereby feeding the cycle of fiscal and political abuse. Ethical Christian men and women, much smarter than I, must somehow come into the equation to be the courageous voice of the voiceless and the Voice of God[61] in the public forum. Until that day though there are particular items in health care as we know it that can be viewed from a Christian Ethos[62].

Equitable and reasonable insurance premiums for employed citizens based on a sliding fee scale adjustable by household size and net take home income. This issue would be a start that insurance companies and government bureaucrats could gradually make living situations easier and more ethical for all peoples[63]. I think also better safety nets in terms of health care insurance coverage would be a very ethical way for insurance companies, government and society to treat those who fall on hard times with dignity. Had it not been for health care that I received in the military and in the veterans hospitals there is no doubt that I would not be as healthy as I am today or I would be trying to get healthy while trying to pay off mountains of healthcare related debt. Somewhere along the line some government leaders decided to treat military and veterans with basic dignity in keeping with Christian Ethics. I will never cease to thank our Merciful God[64] who I love so very much for granting me my life back and doing so in a medical system that I did not incur a mountain of debt. So many people, who have never served in the military, do not have the same grace. I think this is why it is prudent in the Light [65]of the Our Lord Jesus Christ[66] to extend the same Mercy[67] to or brothers and sisters. We treat others as Christians the same way we would want others to treat us[68] regardless of religion, class, gender or life circumstances and even past sins and failings. It is only when we apply the Truth to our own behavior to those who are less fortunate and examine how we are treating our brothers and sisters that we can act with Mercy. For I feel treating others ethically is both an act of Mercy and an act of faith in the Truth in God's commandments.

A good friend of mine is an insurance fraud investigator. From what I understand most claims over a certain dollar amount or meeting some basic parameters are given to her to make an initial check to see if there are any obvious signs of fraud. It would honestly be very difficult for me to have such a position as I think it would skew my perspective on people. With my friend this is not the case in fact the opposite has happen. If she sees, by the time they come to her desk, a 45% fraudulent rate then she says that things look pretty good and society is running well. I have heard so many stories about people who fall on hard times or just become very greedy and feel they need to defraud the insurance company. This activity is obviously unethical behavior on the part of the claimant. Society ends up paying higher premiums for to cover losses and the criminal basically is responsible for two thefts- the initial theft[69] and fraud and the secondary theft[70] from the pockets of innocent people who have to pay higher premiums. We have to find a way to combat insurance fraud and theft in justice and love. I feel we also as followers of Our Lord Jesus Christ need to take steps to help eliminate the underlying causes of such actions by 'normally' good people. Providing for unemployment, health insurance benefits and family therapy to get at the root causes of the families who are suffering. No quarter should be given to allow such behavior but it the entire problem is dealt with in Love and Justice then many of these situations I have been told about can be prevented.

In closing the only solution for any ethical situation is Our Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, it is He who is the only solution for all of humankind’s problems- temporal and spiritual. I think the Christian Ethicist must first be a Christian who is not afraid to bear witness[71] for Jesus Christ[72] then an ethicist next.

I have been told many times of how Sacred Scripture has multiple layers of meaning. I was reading Proverbs the other day and it hit me what the hidden- in fact prophetic message was behind Proverbs 9. It speaks of the Church.
"Wisdom has built her house hewn out of it's seven pillars" (v. 1) The She referred to is as I see it the Holy Catholic Church with her seven sacraments which draw us into the Divine life. Verse 2 tells us "she has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table". We have the very Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity offered to us at each Holy Mass- upon the 'table of plenty' the Holy Altar. The wisdom of the proverb goes on however I think you get the picture.
What a wonderful gift God has given to us in His Church and how we abuse that gift by taking lightly the great mystery that we are being offered through Her- the Bride of Christ. Let us pray this Lent that we can grow in appreciation of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Bride. Look to the Cross and rend your hearts today.

Things I noticed this Lent on the internet....

I am limiting my television and internet time over Lent however one of the things I have noticed on some of the Catholic blogs and even regular websites is some petty (relatively) complaining. Yes, if this was not Lent it would be important stuff. Not now. We must focus on Lent--we must focus on rending our hearts, on penance, on prayer on Jesus Christ. I am not trying to say that discussion about liturgical norms or abuses do not have their place- they do- just not right now. I think it confuses many. We have a obligation I feel as Catholic bloggers and internet publishers to proclaim first and foremost Christ crucified right now so to be witnesses to the world.
We can focus so much on the accidentals that we loose focus on the substance- the heart of the matter. The more we put into Lent- the more we rend our hearts and do serious prayer and penance now the better we will be later on the Glorious Easter. I think also we are coming fast upon some big events shrouded in darkness and iniquity very soon. I pray I am wrong. If I am great and we get to have a wonderful Easter after a blessed Lent. If I am right then we need this time of preparation. Either way our souls benefit-for we always benefit when we turn from sin and evil and look to the Cross of Jesus Christ.
The the victory the evil one can gain on each of us as bloggers and our readers this Lent is if we get so worked up about accidentals that we loose focus on Our Lord Jesus Christ and the purpose of Lent. I do not blog much right now primarily because I am busy as all get out. I also especially do not blog too much right now because I would rather spend the time in prayer and in spiritual reading during this Lent. One of the big things I am having to learn this Lent is to not worry about the things that I have no control over and offer the rest up. Christ has to come first.
Please get off the internet. Please turn off the television. Please stop blogging about problems and pour out your heart for Jesus Christ and be a witness today.

On Christistian Environmental Ethos

And now you get to see my Christian environmental ethics position paper. Don't you feel lucky- or not. I am finishing a position paper on another topic in ethics as I write this little note but needed to take a break for a minute to process what I want to say. So I decided to publish another previous paper to give me a chance to think about something different and also give you something more to read. Later in the week I might come back and add the proper links to the papers published though right now I do not have the time.
I do still want to release a new blog and post the final posting on this one however that is not a priority over the next couple days I think. I am trying to limit my internet time to less than 45 minutes a day for non school related surfing- such as email and blogging over this Lent and even then only certain days a week. I guess since I suggested this to you I should joyfully lead by example. Please keep us in your prayers.

Corporate Global and Environmental Responsibility:

I feel that that the over riding Christian Ethical consideration in Global and Environmental Stewardship should be simply drawing upon the commandment of Our Savior to love one another. For if we apply that rule to considerations concerning environmental issues we would have to insure the prudent stewardship of the environment for future generations while still utilizing creation to help feed the citizens, in body and soul, today. We feed the hungry not only from the obvious fruits of creation animal, vegetable, sea life, clean air and clean water but also by insuring that the glory of God's creation[1] can help feed the souls[2]. Responsible prudent stewardship[3] encompasses not just today's generation but subsequent generations[4]. If we damage the environment to the point that future generations of God's children will not be able to breath clean air, drink clean water or obtain quality food then I feel we are breaking the commandment by Our Lord Himself to love one another[5]. Obviously due prudence must be taken with our actions or lack of actions. The created is always subservient to humankind and ultimately to God. The world is a wonderful beautiful creation[6] however alas it is a creation of Almighty God[7] we must therefore always place environmental policies and ideas in their proper place. Christians must always reject any notion which places creation in a status of God[8]- such as the pagans have done in the past.

I feel also that in environmental policies that sometimes there is not a right or wrong answer- that is if sin in anyway is not involved as a result of action or lack of action. Some issues in environmental policy are not ethical decisions in the manner which we have been examining them. Possibly in these (and only these) situations a utilitarian dimension needs to be considered. That is only however in the occasional time when the conditions set above. As a novice to Christian ethics though I freely admit that I could be very wrong on this approach and so I submit to your judgment and wisdom[9].

Stewardship of the environment in the context as I have presented in the previous paragraphs also includes the ethical and humane treatment of animals. Once again due prudence is required as many times this degenerates into giving animals greater rights than human beings. Do we need to as best we can not inflict needless pain and suffering on animals- yes. Do we care for animals to the extent that human beings do not receive care or food- absolutely not.

I feel that I must address a point that was brought out in the text book concerning "environmental mystism". Having studied the lives of numerous Saints of God including St Francis of Assisi[10] I feel confident in saying that while St Francis and others loved God's creation it was a very small part of their spirituality as a Christian- as it should be. Francis and others were always focused upon the Crucified and Risen Jesus Christ. Yes he could see the glory of God's creation[11] around him- as we should all- however Christ Jesus[12] remained the focus of his life after his conversion. I think the author agreed with me on that- I think it is some radical environmentalists who while wanting to adopt the occasional environmental tones of St Francis miss the mark concerning who Francis knew was the most important One- Almighty God. We all need someone near and close to God to pray for us- as our brother and sister- just as we ask each other to pray for us. Even radical environmentalists need a big brother to pray for them to help them run the race to Christ. I know that John and Charles Wesley[13] who I look to for inspiration rode the circuit as preachers and I would imagine also shared in Francis's love of creation however, they too would always want the focus to be upon Christ Jesus. Unfortunately, people miss the picture that either our brothers or sisters in heaven or here on earth would never want us to take our focus off Our Lord Jesus Christ. I guess it would be like someone taking a statement in a sermon about baseball out of context and missing the point of Jesus Christ. Sorry though, I am just saddened when I hear people venturing off so much and taking there eyes off of the Jesus Christ that I (that we) love so much. Environmentalism is alas just a science like any other field and they are all subject under the Science of God in Theology.[14]

I believe mankind is progressing to the point through God's Grace and Mercy in the various sciences that we now have the ability to be better stewards of creation in our energy policies. Cleaner and safer sources of energy that will help all of mankind need to be utilized and that have a direct relationship in the love another rule. If we are burning fossil fuels which pollute the environment through consumption, production, acquisition or in toxic accidents then we are not really showing love to our brothers and sisters in the present and future. Once again due prudence is required in the gradual change to cleaner sources so as to not put an undue burden upon God's children. However some sacrifice may be necessary to insure the long term environmental stability of the Earth and God's children.

Humankind faces great challenges to meet the needs of a growing population.[15] However, God has provided us with the technological and intellectual know how to easily feed and care for as many children of the Most High that He brings into life. It will be mankind's responsibility to provide for the needs of some with the resources of others and visa versa. What one population has in the way of certain resources another can use so that all of God's children can share in the bountiful harvest that He provides. However those with a particular resource must never be so selfish with it or with pricing that the rest of mankind suffers. This applies to food resources and energy resources. We must be bold in our decision making concerning environmental and global policy and always place mankind's trust[16] and hope[17] in Our Lord Jesus Christ- the Incarnate Word[18] who with the Father and the Holy Spirit created us and the world that we share.[19]

The question was asked "What aspects of decision-making in that [sic. Medical facility] context represent the greatest ethical challenges?" I will attempt to give some of the current challenges that we face today. I will further attempt to answer the question posed "How would alternative ethical systems affect the approach to such challenges? Describe the various dimensions of [how] a Christian ethic would affect work and decision-making in such a facility." For reasons of brevity I have focused this paper primarily upon end of life issues that currently face medical facilities.
Euthanasia and assisted suicide present challenges to the Christian today. While desiring to see the end of suffering in our brother or sister we face the very real possibility that our actions or lack of actions bring about the death of a human being.
Modern medical science has through the Eternal Wisdom of God allowed mankind to bring quality and length to human beings. Many injuries and diseases which brought about death immediately are now treated bringing great consolation to individuals, families and society who just a few hundred years ago would be suffering greatly. Modern man is used to being able through science and technology. Through the infinite Wisdom and Mercy of God mankind is able to alleviate suffering in her children. Yet still, despite her best efforts humankind can only postpone the inedibility of death and suffering. So, it is secular man’s solution to the problem of suffering is to extinguish the life which has been given to the world and to the individual.
To borrow the old axiom "the ends do not justify the means" to which the opposite would be utilitarianism. I feel that the Christian who in their personal life or public life in a medical facility must take due note of the means at which suffering is alleviated. While every effort must be made as a sacred duty to God to relieve the suffering of an individual at no time directly or indirectly must the sacredness of human life be forsaken and destroyed. All available means must be taken to alleviate the pain and suffering of the individual by use of medications, nutrition and hydration, medical treatments, psychosocial care and pastoral care. The family, friends and loved ones need to be involved in the decision making process and in the psychosocial and pastoral care aspect also. Care must be given to respect the differences in cultural and religious aspects of the individual. However none of these important items must ever outweigh the dignity of the life of the individual by shortening the length of life.
Medical facilities must be guided by Natural Law which comes directly from God in their actions and decision making concerning individuals in their care. It should be the primary responsibility of the medical facility to treat and promote the sacred dignity of the individual. The axiom must be reinforced to "first do no harm" in the care of the individual human person. If this sacred dignity is upheld then all staff and their relations and work ethics are affected towards a common good. The rule applies not only to the physicians and nurses involved in direct patient care but also to the social workers, therapists, clerical staff and especially the hospital chaplain who must serve as a constant witness for the Truth and Love of God and as an advocate for the individual and the family.
While the suffering of the individual must be cared for it must be done to preserve the sacred dignity of the patient even in the final hours of life. It is in those final hours (hours that can only be determined by God not mere creatures) that great mercy and grace can flow forth from the suffering individual to countless souls and to the individual soul. Many times those who are unrepentant find Our Lord in those final hours, many times relationships are healed by being brought together in the suffering of a family member or friend, staff of medical facilities have to witnessed those opportunities for God's Mercy and Grace in their lives as the individual faces the waning hours of life. There is also the opportunity in these times for God to work individual miracles of healing in the individual patient and thereby show His Glory through them. Yet when this opportunity is denied through forced (by the individual, the family, the facility or society) death of the patient then the bad yeast develops within others and society.
The Christian is under no obligation to ever end the life through any means of an individual. Neither family pressures, nor employment pressures or societal pressures- even from government- can force the Christian to end the life of another. All manmade law is subject first and foremost to the Divine Natural Law and therefore no law regardless of the source can be just if it violates the Divine Natural Law. Therefore no Christian should ever feel obligated by manmade laws that violate Divine Law. In fact the Christian has the responsibility to ring out with a prophetic voice when the laws and rules of man violate the Divine Law. So, this requires prayerful discernment in every case to insure that the Law of God is not violated by action or lack of action- which would fall under either sin of omission or of commission. We always choose first life and then other decisions will fall into place with some variance of effort.
A brief notation though is required I feel that means to preserve the life of the individual do not have to require "extraordinary measures" which would not add to the eventual progression of an illness nor would increase the quality of the life of an individual. This term "extraordinary means" should never include basic nutrition and hydration as they themselves do add to the quality of life of the individual who is facing death. However individuals who freely choose those "extraordinary means" no impediment should be given for their choice to try one last method and 'hope beyond hope' for that in it self could be the opportunity for God to work through the hands of his instruments of mercy and healing.
In the medical facility it self structure must be established to first educate all providers and patients and family regarding ethical decisions in the light of natural law . Furthermore in that structure at each level constant reevaluation of patient care regarding particularly the ethical treatment of individuals must be established. A system of clear rules and of checks and balances must be established so that the right to life by the individual is not violated even by their self or own family while at the same time guaranteeing the right to choose said treatment is always upheld. This presents a challenge and that is why I feel that while always working under the framework of natural law and Christian ethics medical systems must evaluate each individual case so as not to be exclusionary in practice.
The guiding principles of Divine Natural Law should further be applied to bio-science and medical research. God is the Author of All Life and mankind should never interfere with the Hand of God through the pursuit of scientific knowledge. This further carries over to aspects such as human cloning, selective genetics, bio engineering, abortion, family planning prior to conception and any and all medical experiments. Neither society nor does the individual ever have the right to selectively choose when life is imparted and how. Society, or an individual, does not have the right to create a life just to use that life to aid in scientific research or even in the continuation of life in society or other individuals. Each life has a unique sacred dignity and no life which has been given by God is more or less valuable to society than any other.
Volumes can be written on the implementation of Christian Ethics in the medical facility and with the advancement of science in the world there can be no way to account for what possible dilemmas may occur in the future. However, if the Christian or society facing choices returns to viewing each dilemma within the framework of Divine Law then many problems can be avoided or brought to an ethical conclusion. It is the sacred duty of the Christian to stand up with a prophetic voice and take action when needed when ethical dilemmas arise within society or their own lives for we are alas "our brother's keeper".

Ruff spots and gratitude

These last few days have been challenging in many ways to me. I looked back on my day today with some ruff spots but with some very wonderful joys and great graces and I wish in several things I would have been even more of a witness- maybe even a silent witness. I think one of the big things I learned today which really upset me was that I (we all) can get so focused on a injustice or problem that we don't accept the graces that Our Lord grants us right before our eyes. I did that today. Rather than being grateful and joyful about some really good things- in several cases I focused a couple times on things that I should not have. So my lesson on this first Friday of Lent is to be thankful to God for the little things and offer up the rest. He is Merciful and He calls us each to come into the warmth of His Sacred Heart.
Yes I think things are going to get pretty dicey in the very near future. I think though if we (I) can not experience the joy and peace today then later it will be so very hard to find inner peace amist confusion. Take a breath tonight- find His Mercy and Peace and remain in His Love. Look to the Cross and trust. We (I) can not be His witness(s) if we are not at peace within His Heart. Peace within I might note does not mean peace in the world for if we are not being persecuted we are not proclaiming His Truth as Cardinal Newman said.
Thank you Lord Jesus for this day! Jesus, I love you and trust in You!

Giving up????

Lent is here. So many just associate it with giving something up. Usually they give up something that they should not have too much of in the first place. I have done it too. It is easy to give up sweets, ice cream, chips, soda or something like that. This Lent propel your soul further and quite messing around with namby pamby half hearted Christianity. God deserves better and your soul deserves better than that.
Let the heathens meditate on rocks and pray to the spirit of flowers or what ever they do. Embrace the Truth. Embrace the Faith of the True and Living God. Embrace the Cross of Jesus Christ. You are a child of the Most High God for goodness sake. You are called by God Himself to be a great Saint. You will not get there with a half hearted lukewarm Lent or life. It is time for you to begin- along with me to live as Children of Light.
You want to do penance? Give up all television (or at least give up all but 30 minutes- an hour a day) for Lent. Give up all internet (or a very big portion). Figure out what you spend on extras -from junk food to movie rentals to dinner out for the entire Lenten period and give that anonymously to a food shelf. With your extra time pray an extra Rosary and an extra Chaplet of Divine Mercy everyday. Attend daily Mass throughout Lent. Go to Confession each week during Lent. You want real suggestions to improve your spiritual life then try these or an adaptation (using prudence of course). If you want to really grow spiritually then you are going to have to begin some active purification. Feel good fluff will not get your soul anywhere other than potentially lead you into the pit.
Now here is the invitation to all the Catholic bloggers out there- each and everyone of you. Pick 5 days or so each week during Lent and do not blog at all- pray instead. Test yourself and see if blogging has taken a little bit to much priority over prayer- over God. Now I know I just made folks mad at that one. I did not mean to however we all need to reexamine what we hold up as priorities- I do. Start adding up how much time you spend on your phone with chatter and gossip- give it up- who is your God- the phone, your neighbor or The True and Living God. I certainly have to do some serious reevaluation myself. We all have so much need for improvement and purification within. If we don't like the way things are with the world or within the Church then we must first go through a vigilant active purification individually.
Folks it is crunch time. We need Saints to be formed not spiritual weaklings who will fold under the slightest pressure. We need to embrace this Lent as a great opportunity to become saints for Christ not run from it. To embrace it though we need to do penance and pray and hit that confessional in earnest. Today we begin let us do this together for Christ.

Praised be Jesus Christ!! Now and Forever!!
I am a firm believer in the adage lead by example especially in the life with Christ and His Church. Primarily it is that reason that lately I have not been blogging as frequently. Be it going to school and serving Christ as His student or my personal life or life with my parish ect. ChristJesus healed me and now my responsibility is to fulfill my vocation before me in these tasks He sets before me. These last few weeks have been so rewarding personally and spiritually though it cuts into blogging a bit as you have noticed. I will be blogging a bit more soon- maybe some this weekend- first accomplish the mission then go fishing.
I have much to say but right now not enough time. I can say this.....
Prepare yourself spiritually and do it today. Rend your hearts! Go to confession and pray! Spend time with Our Lord Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Attend Holy Mass frequently. Pray and prepare! I can not be more serious about this- it is crunch time my friends.
I will try to blog later Saturday after I make my confession and go to Mass (and do a fair amount of homework). That gives you plenty of time to do your tasks and begin anew to prepare your souls. Stay strong and remain in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I will come back later and add some links to this posting- right now my mission is to get some rest for it has been a very long day.

Offering up again......

Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and Forever!
Four times in the past three days I have had to put it in practice, though I should have praticed it many times more, it is what I call offering up and pouring out. The particulars of the situations are not really that important nor would it be too prudent to post in an public forum. Needless to say though I have had to face situations and fears, we all have them, in which I did all I could do and then I was frustrated and becoming anxious. The situations worked there selves out in large part but I think the key for me was when I prayed from the heart "Thine Will be done...Not mine" and offered the anxiety and worry and in one case pain up for the conversion of souls. It sounds much easier writing this down and from retrospect than it is at the time. It comes down I think to trust. Do I entrust my cares and pain to The One who is Mercy, Love and Truth so that He can work within me and others or do I hold on to them with some warped sense of ownership? It presents a problem because we all want to be to some extent in control. We also, each of us, I think enjoy in someway holding on to pain or suffering because it gives us a feeling of control and, I think, gives us something to complain about. Oh my gosh how I love to complain even to myself and to God. That is so wrong. We do what we can do- the best we can with what ever the situation and we give the rest to Christ. We need to, I need to, give all to Him and then do my (our best) within what Divine Providence dictates. I think when I get to the point that instead of fighting what or whom ever that I offer it up and surrender to God that He can work the biggest wonders within me and others. It takes lots of practice. I got to exercise those spiritual muscles several times recently and I know that I will get more opportunities to do the same in the future. Alas, don't we all.
I have no great intelligence nor any great ability however I am starting to find out that my weaknesses (and they are vast) are in fact the greatest streagths to God. I think sometimes He likes to take those who are weakest in countless areas and through His Grace work some of the biggest miracles just to show the world and especially the evil one how great and wonderful God is. Praise God I am one of those Divine 'projects' of Grace and Mercy. I would venture to say each of you have your own areas which are causing hardship, suffering, pain and areas which you are very weak. It might be in your health, your family, your occupation, your education, friends, relationships from the past which are in disarray or in your prayerlife or spiritual journey. You might like me grow to become frustrated and anxious or want to hold on to the pain, the weakness or the suffering. Maybe it is comfortable- you know it- you may not like it but you know it well. My advise from experience is simply and maybe not so simply to caste your cares, your worries, your pain, your weakness, those in your life and yourself into the Divine Furnace of Ardent Charity and let God transform that (and you) into the great saint He is calling you to be. Let Christ Jesus be in control and don't look back. I assure you that it will be the grandest ride imaginable and you will never regret it. This I know.
I seem to remember writing in this blog or in one of the articles I submitted in the past for publication that we sometimes tend to use pain, suffering, past frustrations and failures and our weaknesses as crutches. We hold onto these things since even they can become comfortable- the devil we know, in otherwords. I know that I have done that and I would venture to say that many in a wide variety of things hold on to that devil we know rather than surrendering the weakness, the heartbreak, the suffering or what ever to The One who can actually bring healing to us. Maybe it is a fear that what if God does heal us then we face the obligation of further proclaiming His Mighty Deeds. Maybe we fear that the healing or assistance He will bring will not be temporal but spiritual and we will face the reality of more suffering though with a new purpose: to offer it for the conversion of others. Maybe it is just because we all like to complain. I think with me it is a combination of all of those and maybe more. I only know though that in these past few days and before when I finally got to the point that I fully surrendered it all to God that the results began to happen. God loves each of us with an everlasting love. The evil one wants each of us to be so caught up in the distractions and anxieties of the day that we loose focus on Christ. If we try to control things ourselves, if I do myself, then we are doomed in various ways to failure and lots of unhappiness. We have to each reach a moment, and this may occur numerous times, when we finally say "Your Will be done Lord Jesus not mine". Then the real fun begins in the soul and the world around us.
The Psalm below appeared appropriately in yesterday's Compline in my Divine Office. I felt it was a fitting one to add to this posting.

Praised be Jesus Christ!! Now and Forever!!
I am reminded in the first reading for Saturday's Mass of the old summer camp song "It only takes a spark to get a fire going". We can be, each of us, effective instruments for God and to inflame the faith within others. Simply by being faithful, through prayer, example, deed and word we can each contribute to the salvation of souls untold. We live as daily witnesses to the Truth, Love and Mercy of God in such a way that people are drawn to Him. Even if we are suffering we can be a witness by offering up to God our suffering for souls in our lives and around the world. You matter and what you do matters.
We can also pull souls into further darkness by actions and words that are not in keeping with the sacred dignity that we have all been called to. Do we act poorly on the freeway, do we act poorly to neighbors who come at inconvenient times, do we speak poorly of people, do we look on others as objects for scorn- ridicule or desire? We all will have to face out sins in judgment when we have lead others astray at those times. We can also lead others astray by watering down the Truth of Christ and His Church so that others continue to fall into darkness without Christ's Light shining through us to guide them.
I think it comes down again to choices do we choose to live as children of the Light or children of the darkness. Do we grow in the spiritual life or do we allow are souls to fall into decay and there by through commission or omission lead souls right in to the hands of the evil one. I choose Life. I choose Love. I choose Mercy. I choose Truth. I choose Christ Jesus Our Lord today. Please join in with me and let us through the Holy Spirit start a fire of God's Eternal Love, Mercy and Truth in the dark forest of despair. The choice is up to you. Let us all pass His Mercy on.

Praised be Jesus Christ!! Now and Forever!!
This is a good prayer for a Friday as tomorrow most Catholic parishes throughout the world will be having confession going on. I suggest that you pray this tonight and a couple times tomorrow along with your regular prayers to prepare yourself for the awesome Sacrament of Mercy that we have through Confession. Why not begin this Lent in a state of Grace so that you can better grow and mature in this Holy Season. Don't put it off any longer. Why are you settling for mediocre Christianity? Return to God and do not play around anymore with milquetoast Christianity. It does not matter how long it has been or how bad you have been. Our Lord is waiting for you hidden behind that priest and He is calling you.
Begin today with this prayer and by asking God for His Mercy. Tomorrow you confess- and I do to. I will pray for you and you do that for me please and for all those who read this also.

If you have any good solid Catholic books that you feel would be helpful to others please email me with the information regarding the book(s). I would especially enjoy ideas passes on from priests, deacons and religious. If the person could provide why they like it and whether you do or not want your name put out I would appreciate it greatly. Hopefully by Monday morning early I can post a list for everyone.

Novena for Lent

We are coming quickly up on Lent and the thought came to me when coming back from a Holy Hour today why not encourage you all to start a novena to pray that we make a good Lent? This is my suggestion. Start offering three times a day three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and three Glory Be's in honor of the Blessed Trinity and ask God to help each of us come to make a better Lent and be drawn into His Heart even more this year. Very simple and easy. I can not imagine that God would not be pleased with a request like that and talking about doing our souls some good in the process. When we do this let us also ask for the grace to know any unconfessed sins so that we can confess them and be done with them and grow in love.

Cool in the Furnace.......

I love this passage so much. This is pure trust in God in action. Pure faith. I actually chanted part of this before Our Lord the other night when I was alone with Him during my Holy Hour.
I think we all face times in our lives (I certainly have) when we have to step into the furnace a bit and put our complete trust in The One Who Is Mercy, Love and Truth. We will all soon be facing times of great challenge and the only way to make that act of faith then is to make those little acts of faith today in prayer. If we are not being faithful now when things are easy then we better begin fast for the hour is getting late my friends. We must prepare our selves spiritually to be able to endure the fire and the test that we will face. There is a time for everything and right now it is time to restructure our lives, clean house and pray. Soon we will all wish we had spent that time getting to know the God who can protect us and loves us. Let us pray that we can all have the kind of faith in the Almighty One that these young men had.
Take a few minutes and read through the passage and spend some time in prayer getting to know God. May we all have that kind of faith and trust for He will keep up cool in the furnace.

There are certain Jews whom you have made administrators of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego; these men, O king, have paid no attention to you; they will not serve your god or worship the golden statue which you set up." Nebuchadnezzar flew into a rage and sent for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were promptly brought before the king. King Nebuchadnezzar questioned them: "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you will not serve my god, or worship the golden statue that I set up? They walked about in the flames, singing to God and blessing the Lord. In the fire Azariah stood up and prayed aloud:
"Blessed are you, and praiseworthy, O Lord, the God of our fathers, and glorious forever is your name.
For you are just in all you have done; all your deeds are faultless, all your ways right, and all your judgments proper. Now the king's men who had thrown them in continued to stoke the furnace with brimstone, pitch, tow, and faggots. The flames rose forty-nine cubits above the furnace, and spread out, burning the Chaldeans nearby. But the angel of the Lord went down into the furnace with Azariah and his companions, drove the fiery flames out of the furnace, and made the inside of the furnace as though a dew-laden breeze were blowing through it. The fire in no way touched them or caused them pain or harm. Then these three in the furnace with one voice sang, glorifying and blessing God:

Prayer for Detachment

Praised be Jesus Christ!! Now and Forever!!
I was sent this prayer from across the Pacific and thought I would pass it on to you. I have this prayer in one of my books and remember seeing it before. I have been asking especially over the past few weeks for the prayers of the various Jesuit Saints for a little mission I am on. I ask them to continue to intercede for me and for all of you also. Since I am asking for prayers right now please say a couple extra for me as I carry out this task before me and if you could pray that I find a good place to make a really good Lenten retreat and for a few special intentions I would appreciate it.
What a wonderful journey God takes us on if we only trust and obey. Our Merciful Lord is so good to me His most unworthy servant and friend.

Is there not a place for God to rest......

The in the Office of Readings today Psalm 132 came up. My Breivary refers to this Psalm as the Divine Promise to the house of David. I started thinking today about when David says that he will not give sleep to his eyes nor slumber until he finds a place for the Lord. This made me think of how we all need to approach the Sacrament of Penance prior to receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist. Our hearts shall enthrone Him and become a place for Him-would we not want to find a fitting dwelling place just as David? Would we not want to purge our hearts of any stain and sin so that we have a proper dwelling place for God? Would we not want to go with the same zeal and not give sleep to our eyes until we are prepared to receive Him? Also with things such as imperfections and venal sin would we not want to confess those things that we know of so that when we receive Our Lord that there are no unnecessary filters of His Graces.
I know that some of the various Saints speak of the soul and the spiritual life in terms of a diamond which has to be chipped away and polished to reveal the color and the spectrum of light. The stone itself does not produce the light rather just sparkles with the light from the original light source. Maybe as the soul processes through the spiritual life it too is chipped away of first major flaws and then lesser ones and then polished and repolished so that it sparkles with the Light of Christ. So the more docile the soul becomes to the craftsman -in this case the Holy Spirit- at work the easier and faster the he or she can move towards being that shining gem that we are all called to be.
So the application of the gem concept in the hands of the craftsman to the initial idea of Confession and Eucharist that it is through them that we become more docile to the workings of the Holy Spirit. It is, I think, through this process that we like David can give a fitting home to the Lord God of Hosts. David would not rest until a proper home was found and so to we should never weary of constantly rending our hearts- through daily examination of conscience, through frequent use of the confessional, through daily Eucharistic Adoration, through daily prayer and through frequent reception of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Then through the power of the Holy Spirit who is the doctor of all souls we start to shine with the radiance of Christ. We can then give Our Lord a fitting home and His Light will burst forth from us into a world of darkness.
David's faithfulness was rewarded and so to will be ours but we must begin today. I remind you again that there is a reason that I have the death counter on this blog. It is not because it is interesting or some morbid curiosity with death on my part. I have it there to serve as a witness to everyone that our time is numbered. I know the brevity of life and how death can come when we least expect it. We submit ourselves in prayer today and leave tomorrows spiritual progress to Divine Providence. Today is the gift we have- today is the time we must like David find a fitting home for God and let us enthrone Him within our hearts and lives.

Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and Forever!

Most Holy God open up the eyes of our souls that we may face our own sinfulness and to have true contrition for our offenses against You and our neighbor. Grant us Divine Light to see the true state of our souls so that we may confess our sins and receive Your Mercy. Grant that same Divine Light that we may see the spiritual realities that surround us so that we may avoid temptation, sin and error. Grant Your Light to those who are lost in the darkness of sin and error to the entire world and especially to those in our lives. May Your Merciful Light illuminate us in such a way that people are drawn to the splender of Truth which comes only from You. Help us with that Light to become ever more faithful to You and to Your Holy Church.

Grant also Oh Holy One that the ears to our souls may be opened to better hear the Truth of Your Word proclaimed to us so that we can put into practice daily Your Holy Will. Open the ears to our souls that we may hear the cries of those lost in darkness and better witness for You. Open the ears to our souls so that we may recognize error more clearly and that we may reject all that is not in keeping with the Truth that You and Your Church bear. Strengthen us Lord God through the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Your Son- Our Lord Jesus Christ against all sin and error.

Lord God, You know how much we firmly believe in Your Love, Truth and Mercy and You know how easily we fall. Help us despite our numerous faults and failings to return always to You and to Your Church to receive forgiveness through our confession and salvation through the very Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Divine Son Our Lord Jesus Christ. Lord God renew our love for You and for each other and stretch our hearts to better receive Your Love. Protect and deliver us dear Lord God from every evil, both physical and spiritual, that we may better be the living witnesses of Your Mercy, Love and Truth to the world. Shelter us Most Merciful God and give us courage to accept our crosses and our vocations that You have called us to. Be with, guide and grant special graces and blessings to our Holy Father, Your Vicar on Earth, and to his brother Bishops and to all priests, religious, deacons and the entire faithful. May we all be shining lights of Your Truth, Love and Mercy to a world in darkness and chaos.

Lord God we love you. May every beat of our hearts from this moment forward ring out with our love and praise of You. Most Holy Lord God we thank you for Your Love, Your Mercy and Your Truth and for calling us to be Your beloved sons and daughters through Christ Our Lord- Your Son. Father send forth Your Holy Spirit upon each of us and those in our lives and upon the entire world to renew us and to keep us faithful always to You. Most Holy Trinity we bless You, we adore You, we praise You, we thank You and we Love You. Through the intercession of Mary the Mother of God and all the Angels and Saints may our prayer rise before You always. Amen.

I really enjoyed Father Altier's homily for today. I wanted to pass it on to you with the hope that more of you will more frequently read his words and come to know Our Lord through them. Alas, neither my feeble words nor his more knowledgeable words nor anyone else can force you to pray or rend your hearts or go to confession or attend Mass more often or make your own Holy Hour. You will have to do that on your own. This I know though and I can say with absolute certainty to the point that I will stake all on it- if you seek Our Lord He will draw you into a Heart of absolute Love. It may sting a bit to face your own faults and sins- it does me- yet I still go for I do not want anything to hold me back from the Love, Mercy and Truth of God.
I will not bother you with my feeble words though but rather pass on this particular homily to you with the link to Father's site. Hopefully, someday I can drive over and attend one of his Masses but that is another day.

Thursday February 9, 2006 Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading (1 Kings 11:4-13) Gospel (St. Mark 7:24-30)

In the readings today, we see two completely opposing perspectives on things and a great warning for ourselves. In the first reading, we hear about Solomon, to whom we are told that God Himself appeared twice. Solomon, of course, was given wisdom as a gift and he is known as the wisest man to have ever lived. We see that what Solomon did was to turn that wisdom away from God and to himself. It is a warning for all of us in that way to be very careful not to take the gifts that God has given to us and make them somehow selfish, because all of the ability we have comes from Him. If we start looking at it and saying, "Look at what I can do. Look at my talent, my ability, my, my, my." That is all we get into, and it is all about "me." As soon as we start getting into "me" instead of into God, we go straight down because we are focused in the wrong direction.

Solomon, then, who knew God and knew that there is only one God, starts building altars for all of his foreign wives. He even starts worshiping some of these foreign gods. Then, worst of all, we are told that he even built an altar to Molech. Molech is a demon who required human sacrifice. And so the people in Israel actually began sacrificing their babies.

Not unlike America, is it? Or most of the other countries in the world right now. We just do it in a little different way, but nonetheless the reality is the same: We are sacrificing our babies to demons. Look at the result. Our society is spiraling out of control, and it is for that very reason. There is no possible way that a society can kill its own and think that it is going to survive. What we have done in America, which was based on Christian principles, is to give ourselves over to false gods. Maybe they do not have explicitly the same names as the ones that Solomon started to worship, but they are false gods nonetheless. Call them what you will -money, abortion, materialism -it is all the same stuff.

They are all demonic things that make us think about ourselves, but the reality is that if we are not looking at God, it is not just ourselves that we are looking at. There is a spiritual reality that underlies these things. If our focus is not on God and looking at what He is doing for us, then our focus is ultimately going to be on Satan. Neither God nor Satan can be seen by us, but only the effects can. So Satan is going to be right there to promise us all kinds of things, but the reality is that what he is going to do is lead us right into ourselves and take us down with him. Satan wants us in hell with him, and he does not care what means he has to use to get us there. He is very slick. Solomon fell into this trap, and we do too. He fell into it because he had married 900 wives. What an idiot! Nonetheless, the fact of the matter is that this man was caught up in himself, and that was the trap Satan used. Maybe we will not fall into that particular trap, but Satan knows our weakness, and if we are not praying and working on our virtues, he knows how to pull us down. He will offer us whatever temptation we need.

Then, on the other side, we see this woman who comes to the Lord. She is a pagan. She is a Greek. And the Lord tells her that He is not going to work for her the miracle she is seeking by getting rid of the demon because He came to the children of Israel. It is not right, He says, to take the bread from the children and throw it to the dogs. But when the woman recognizes the reality that she is in, she is able to acknowledge Him and first calls Him "Lord", and then points out that even the dogs under the table eat the scraps of the children. Because this woman was willing to make an act of faith in Him, she received the favor for which she was looking.

So we see that if someone turns away from idols and turns to the true God that the blessings of the Lord are going to be theirs. But if we turn away from the worship of the one true God to false gods, to give ourselves over to idols of whatever variety they might be, we are going to be in trouble. It is a fine balance on the natural level to walk. It is as simple as can possibly be on the spiritual level. There is only one God, and Him alone are we to worship.

Again, we need to be careful. We are probably not burning incense to dollar bills and we are probably not bowing down with our faces to the ground in front of our TV sets, but the reality is that if we are giving ourselves over to such things, they become idols for us. If we start turning our hearts away from God to put them on things of the natural level, or the preternatural level, then we are going to be in trouble. Our hearts stray.

So we need to pray to keep our hearts focused on God. We need to have a deep and profound relationship with God, not just an intellectual knowledge that there is only one God and even to be able to acknowledge that, but to have a relationship with Him because it is only in that relationship that we can be assured that our hearts are not going to stray. We need to keep our hearts focused on Him. It is not an intellectual exercise, but an exercise of the heart, to keep our hearts where they belong: solely focused on the one true God.

I heard one time that if we question whether we are crazy or not chances are we are not for it is the ones who deny that they are that really in fact have the problem. So, the application to this and the spiritual life. When we recognize that we all fall short and sin and repent then we are actually making some degree of progress it is rather when we deny our failing that we really have a very big problem. I am so unworthy it is unbelievable and I fall and need the Mercy of God more than anyone. I sometimes fall into the trap of focusing on that fact to the point that I just want to throw up my hands and give up and not confess and begin anew the daily struggle. No one said it was easy- it is difficult. However it is that struggle I think that creates through God's Mercy and Grace the holiness that we are all called to.

We are each called to extraordinary holiness and none of us can achieve it on our own. We struggle, we admit our failings and we surrender to God everything so that He can create us anew daily. We (I) have to recognize that left to our own devices we will fall so we do the best we can today and surrender all to Christ for Him to mold our souls. It is when we do not recognize our individual sins and failings and deny our tendencies that we stop growing spiritually and actually fall even further. We can, I think, also do this by focusing so much on the sin or the failing that we do not allow or see the Mercy of God at work within us. It is about balance and that balance can only be found I think in meditating on the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ. I think it is not the person who falls repeatedly and goes back to confession again and again and prays daily that has the problem for we all fall in one way or another. Rather I think it is the person who gives up or does not try at all. We must focus on the heart of the matter- who do we serve and where are we trying to get to. Are we focusing on the world, on our own failings, on the failings of others or are we focusing upon The One who is Love, Truth and Mercy Incarnate.

I think that the evil one either wants us to be distracted to the point that we do not either see our individual failings and thereby feel that we do not need the Divine Mercy or we focus so much on our failings that we do not want to put forth the effort. Living for Christ and making the ascent up Mount Carmel is a challenge. The alternative to give up on Christ or on ourselves is not a alternative that leads to the Beatific Vision rather the opposite. Dying to self and putting on Christ is hard and do not let anyone tell you different- yet it is so worth it. Maybe that is why Our Lord referred to it as entering through the narrow gate because it is such a challenge and so few are willing to daily make that challenge. You can do it though. You have been called by The One who is perfect Love, Truth and Mercy. You have been called to a great dignity by the God who created the entire universe to be His beloved.

So, as I begin anew my struggle and so do you I ask that you pray for me that I may continue to fight the good fight and run this long race and know that my prayers come before God for you that you to may hit the mark. Let us focus on Christ and ask him to help us remain faithful and be obediant to The Word Made Flesh and His Bride.
Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us that we may better focus on your Divine Son and pray that we may have the grace of final perseverance and endurance. Amen.

In honor of Our Lady's big day coming up I thought I would post one of my favorite Marian hymns. I love it when I happen across this in my Divine Office- it is yet unknown what my neighbors think of my singing to Mary yet. She can work on their hearts I guess.
Since it is a big Marian Feast day you might want to re-consecrate yourself to Jesus through Mary on Saturday.
